Contest: Tango for Two

July 1st, 2011

Neither wide release next week has monster blockbuster written all over it, but of the two, Zookeeper has the best shot at opening in first place. As such, it is the target film in this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Zookeeper . Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Immigration Tango on DVD. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Immigration Tango on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for June 28th, 2011

June 27th, 2011

It's a bit of a madhouse in terms of DVD and Blu-ray releases this week: Amazon.com has more than 400 listed. That said, a lot of them are catalogue titles that would barely warrant a mention during a slow week. The most intriguing first run release is Sucker Punch on Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy Combo Pack, but while I think it's worth picking up, it's appeal is limited enough that it is not worthy of the Pick of the Week honors. Fortunately, one of the catalogue titles is clearly Pick of the Week material. In fact, Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Edition - Blu-ray is one of the most anticipated releases in the history of Blu-ray. More...

Featured DVD Review: Immigration Tango

June 25th, 2011

Immigration Tango opened earlier in the year with disastrous reviews and a per theater average that was well below the Mendoza Line. Granted, it's a romantic comedy, which is a genre that generally doesn't do well with critics or in limited release. So was this an unfair result? Will the film perform better on the home market? More...

Per Theater Chart: Last Lions Opens in First Place

February 23rd, 2011

There were a pair of $10,000 films on the per theater chart this week, led by The Last Lions with an average of $13,336 in four theaters. I Am was relatively close behind with $10,500 in one theater. More...

This Weekend Could Be Murder on Limited Releases

February 18th, 2011

It's really hard to find many limited releases that are earning more than 80% positive reviews, which is usually the level needed to thrive in limited release. There are several that are on the bubble, but it could be really hard for any of them to find breakout success. There are a few that are earning a lot of positive buzz, including Small Town Murder Songs, but I really don't think any will thrive. More...
