Home Market Numbers: New Releases Get Lost on the Way

October 10, 2013

Given the terrible new releases, it should come as no surprise that the overall Blu-ray market was terrible the week of July 28th 2013. In fact, it was the worst week for the entire year at just 492,000 units / $10.58 million in total sales. This was 20% lower in terms of units and 22% lower in terms of revenue when compared to last week. Compared to last year, it was 12% lower in terms of units and 8% lower in terms of revenue. DVD sales were relatively stronger, so the overall Blu-ray share fell to 21% in terms of units and 30% in terms of revenue. Hopefully this is just an anomaly and we will never see these weak levels again.

DVD sales this week were again mixed when compared to both last week and last year. Compared to last week, there were 4% more units sold, but 7% less revenue generated. Likewise, when compared to last year, there were 5% more units sold, but again 7% less revenue generated.

Looking forward, next week's new releases are much, much, much... much stronger than this week's were. In fact, G.I. Joe: Retaliation should sell more units and generate more revenue that the entire home market did this week. Compared to last year, the home market is also looking much rosier. The best new release was a TV mini-series, Hatfields and McCoys , and G.I. Joe should crush it in terms of sales.
