Pirates Have a Devil of a Time on the Home Market

December 22nd, 2006

The Devil Wears Prada was the best of a new bunch winning out in a very, very close race with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest at $10.74 million to $10.67 million. Third place went Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby with $10.39 million making it the first time in a long, long time that three films earned more than $10 million in rentals in one week. Superman Returns added $7.90 million for a three-week total of $31.56 million. The final film in the top five was Miami Vice with $6.73 million.

World Trade Center just missed the top five during its debut week with $5.76 million. The next new release was Material Girls in 13th place with $3.45 million while Barnyard: The Original Party Animals barely made 19th with $2.46 million during its first week of release on the home market.

Over on the sales chart Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest remained in first place with an estimated 4 million units, just ahead of Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The Devil Wears Prada took home third place as more people were willing to give it a rental than a purchase, but with rave reviews, many of those who gave it a chance will pick it up. Barnyard: The Original Party Animals landed in fourth, which was much, much better placing than on the rental charts, but that's not surprising for kids movies generally perform better on the sales chart than on rental charts. Fifth place went to World Trade Center, just ahead of the direct-to-DVD release, Air Buddies.

Other new releases to chart this week include Fox and the Hound 2 in 8th, Material Girls in 13 and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - 4-Disc Extended Edition.
