February 25, 2004

In an unusual move, Newmarket is already projecting the opening day gross for The Passion of the Christ.

Rob Schwartz, head of distribution for Newmarket, revealed this afternoon that the movie earned about $7 million in matinee ticket sales, playing on 4,643 screens in 3,006 theaters. That follows an estimated $3 million from private screenings to church groups on Monday and Tuesday.

An opening day between $15 million and $20 million is projected, with the total box office gross exceeding $20 million by the end of the day.
