Theater Averages: Ip Man is the Big Man at the Box Office with Average of $7,620

January 27, 2016

Ip Man 3

No film earned an average of more than $10,000. The closest film was Ip Man 3, which earned an average of $7,620. More impressively, it was playing in just over 100 theaters, which is a lot for a limited release.

The next best new limited release was Aferim!, which was well back with an average of just $3,178 in five theaters. Caged No More only managed an average of $598 in over 100 theaters. Synchronicity was close behind with an average of $570 in five theaters. The final film we have numbers for is Monster Hunt with an average of $540 of just 39. It's aimed at kids and kids movies rarely do well in limited release. That said, I was expecting more than this.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Theater Average alumni:

  • Anomalisa got to $1 million since this time last week. However, its per theater average has fallen enough that further significant expansion is unlikely.
  • Carol got all the way to $10 million. That's the good news. The bad news is its Awards Season performance is below expectations, so $15 million is very likely out of reach.
  • Brooklyn topped $25 million over the weekend, which is more than In the Heart of the Sea earned and that film cost $100 million to make.
  • The Big Short crossed $55 million over the weekend putting it ahead of The Fantastic Four on the yearly chart.
