Theater Averages: Moonlight Shines Bright With $100,519

October 25, 2016

Moonlight

Moonlight not only earned the best theater average of the weekend at $100,519 in four theaters, but it had the best average for any film that opened in 2016. It wasn’t the only film to do well this week, as Michael Moore in TrumpLand earned an average of $25,100 in two theaters. The Handmaiden pulled in an average of $18,426 in five theaters, while the re-release of Tanpopo earned $16,410 in one. We are still not done, as the overall number one film, Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, earned an average of $12,611.

There were a lot of other new limited releases, some of which did well. We are X was the best of the rest with $7,526 in one theater, while Spices of Liberty earned $6,625, also in one theater. Fire At Sea and King Cobra were neck-and-neck with averages of $5,953 and $5,812 respectively. Both films were playing in two theaters. Likewise, Ugly, Dirty and Bad and The Uncondemned earned $4,898 and $4,353 in one theater each. American Pastoral only managed an average of $2,981, but it was playing in 50 theaters, so that’s mitigating circumstances. On the other hand, It Had to be You doesn’t have that excuse, as it earned an average of $2,651 in just two theaters. At least it didn’t miss the Mendoza Line, unlike Wildflower, which earned an average of $1,155 in 8 theaters. Finally, there’s In a Valley of Violence, which only managed an average of $889 in 33.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Priceless made it to $1 million over the weekend, but its per theater average is under $1,000, so it will lose most of its theaters this Friday.
  • Desierto also made it to $1 million over the weekend. It’s got a much better chance at $2 million.
  • Denial got to $1 million just before the weekend and nearly hit $2 million over the weekend.
