Friday Estimates: New Releases Won’t Finish First, Man

October 13, 2018

First Man

All of the new releases missed expectations on Friday. This combined with better than expected holds for the holdovers meant there won’t be any new challengers for first place. That said, there will be a relatively close race for first place between Venom and A Star is Born. Venom fell 70% compared to its opening Friday earning $9.79 million. This is enough to put it on pace for $32 million during its sophomore stint, which is on the very high end of expectations.

A Star is Born earned $8.50 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $29 million over the weekend. This is a decline of just 36%, so it is clear its reviews and its A from CinemaScore are helping its legs.

On the other hand, First Man is struggling after earning $5.86 million on Friday, which puts it on pace for $16.8 million over the full weekend. Its reviews remain stellar, but it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore. This isn’t a terrible result, but it is, at best, merely fine and does not bode well for the film’s legs.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween was next with $4.85 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $15.75 million during its opening weekend. The reviews have improved, but are still just 43% positive, while it only managed a B from CinemaScore, which is terrible for a family film. It could still get a boost from Halloween, but don’t expect a lot in terms of legs.

Bad Times at the El Royale opened in fifth place on Friday, but it won’t stay there long. The film opened with $2.82 million on the daily chart, but despite strong reviews, it only managed a B minus from CinemaScore. It might not get to $8 million over the weekend, so Smallfoot will remain in the top five one more week. In fact, this film might not even top Night School over the weekend.
