Searching

It is the week after Thanksgiving, which is a terrible week to release a DVD / Blu-ray. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are over, so a lot gifts are already bought for people who might be interested in a DVD / Blu-ray to watch. That’s not to say there’s nothing on this list that’s worth picking up. There are a few items, but Searching is clearly the best and the Blu-ray is the only real contender for Pick of the Week.

The Critters Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
None of these movies are actually good, but I do like the first film and saw it several times when I was a kid. The Blu-ray box set includes a ton of new extras, including multiple audio commentary tracks, making of featurettes, etc. If you are a fan of these movies, even just two of them, then it is worth picking up. If you know someone who is a fan of all four, then this would be a perfect Christmas gift.

Elizabeth I & Her Enemies: Series 1 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A British TV mini-series starring Lily Cole in the titular role. There are not many reviews out there, but the ones I found were mostly positive.

The Magnificent Ambersons: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Despite lots of studio interference, this is still widely considered a masterpiece and one of Orson Welles’s best pictures. Extras include two audio commentary tracks, archival interviews, radio plays, and more. It is absolutely worth picking up.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume VIII - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
All of the original MST3K episodes that they have the rights to have been released, so this is just a re-release at a lower price. If you don’t have it already, then it is worth picking up.

Patlabor Ultimate Complete Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A classic Anime franchise that began in the 1980s. This massive box set has more than 30 hours of TV shows and movies, not to mention extras. The price-per-minute is also amazing compared to the average Anime release.

Searching - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is one of the best-reviewed films of the year and one of the best limited releases of the year. Extras include an audio commentary track and three featurettes. I’m still waiting for the screener, but it is certainly worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Star Trek: Discovery: Season One - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The latest series in the Star Trek franchise hit the home market a couple of weeks ago, but the screener arrived late. Was it worth the wait? Does this show live up to the Star Trek legacy? Read our review to find out.

Sharper Objects - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An HBO mini-series starring Amy Adams as a reporter who returns home to cover a series of crimes, but has to deal with her mother, Patricia Clarkson, and other things she left behind. The reviews are excellent and there are a quartet of featurettes on the DVD / Blu-ray. Overall, it is worth picking up and close to being a contender for Pick of the Week.

Zombie: Limited Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray (Bridge), Blu-ray (Splinter), or Blu-ray (Worms) discs 1-3
The Italian zombie cult classic that is an unofficial sequel to Dawn of the Dead. The film is being released on three different Blu-rays, which are the same, except for the covers. This feels like a cash grab and leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon:

Christmas with a Prince - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Elf: Buddy’s Sing & Cheer Along Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Hometown Holiday - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Reindeer Family & Me - No Review - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Elf: Buddy’s Sing & Cheer Along Edition is the only Christmas release that is of any interest to me and I would rather have the non-sing-along Blu-ray.

Brewster McCloud - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Gosford Park: Special Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray

Negima!? - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Tales of the Abyss: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
True Stories: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
There’s a lot of Anime on this week’s list, including Lupin the 3rd: The Legend of the Gold of Babylon, which is a complete classic.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Philadelphia - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Just the one 4K release this week and it is not a visually impressive movie and not one you need to watch in 4K.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
No Megasets this week.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Gunn - No Reviews - Video on Demand
The House with a Clock in its Walls - Reviews - Video on Demand
The Predator - Reviews - Video on Demand
Unbroken: Path to Redemption - Reviews - Video on Demand
I put in a request for The House with a Clock in its Walls and it is the best secondary VOD release of the week. Then again, there's not a lot of competition this week.
