Weekend Estimates: Pets Don’t have a Fiery Rebirth with Just $47 million

June 9, 2019

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Neither of the two wide releases matched expectations over the weekend and in both cases, it could be the end of their respective franchises. The Secret Life of Pets 2 is earning first place with $47.11 million, which isn’t a bad result for a family film that cost $80 million to make. However, this estimate is 55% lower than the first film’s opening weekend. Internationally, it is adding $16.0 million over the weekend to its three-week total, which sits at $49.0 million. Additionally, it has yet to open in most international markets, so it should have long legs on this chart. However, it still isn’t living up to the original. Universal has to be looking at this numbers and deciding to move on from the franchise, even though this film will very likely break even sooner rather than later. Even a moderate decline for a hypothetical third film would put profitability in question.

Dark Phoenix’s opening weekend estimate is only $33.0 million, making it by far the worst opening film in the X-Men franchise and that’s before you look at inflation. Additionally, it has the worst reviews in the franchise and the weakest CinemaScore at a B minus. It is doing better internationally with an estimated opening weekend of $107.0 million. Unfortunately, this is more-or-less saving face as it needed a lot more than a $140 million global opening to have a chance of paying for its $200 million production budget any time soon.

Aladdin was the lone bright spot on the weekend chart with an estimated $24.5 million for a three-week total of $232.4 million. There were plenty of people who didn’t think it would earn this much in total. Internationally, the film is holding on even better, pulling in an estimated $67.6 million to push its global earnings to just over $600 million. If anyone thought the live-action Disney remakes were on their way out, this result should make them rethink their position.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters missed expectations, plummeting 67% according to estimates, down to $15.54 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $78.60 million. It will still get to $100 million domestically, but that’s just saving face compared to its $170 million production budget. It is doing considerably better internationally. In fact, it has already cracked $100 million in China. It is already at $109.7 million including $21.8 million this weekend, according to estimates. Overall, it is earning an estimated $47.1 million internationally for totals of $200 million internationally and nearly $300 million worldwide after just two weeks of release. Perhaps the MonsterVerse franchise will continue, if Warner Bros. sees a boost in revenue for the other two films and they think synergy will carry the franchise forward.

Rocketman is coming within a rounding error of expectations. In fact, it is on the high side with an estimated sophomore stint of $14 million for a two-week total of $50.5 million. It will soon become Paramount’s biggest hit of 2019, overtaking Bumblebee, which earned just over $55 million during the calendar year.

It was a good weekend for limited releases with a new yearly-best being set by Late Night with an estimated average of $62,414 in four theaters. This Ones for the Ladies is earning $16,001 in its lone theater, which is also a great start for a limited release.
