2020 - Awards Season: Independent Spirit Awards - Nominations

November 21, 2019

Uncut Gems

The Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced and thus the 2020 Awards Season begins. There are two changes to this year’s coverage of Awards Season. Firstly, we’re going back to using the year the awards are handed out and not the year the movie came out, even though the latter makes so much more sense. We are doing this, because every one else does this and being accurate takes a back seat to being easily understood. Secondly, since the Independent Spirit Awards are not particularly good indicators of Oscar success, we are just going to do summaries and not a full list of nominees.

Uncut Gems and The Lighthouse led the way with five nominations each. However, Uncut Gems earned a Best Picture nomination, so it wins the tiebreaker. Both films have a better shot at Oscar glory after these nominations. Honey Boy was next with four nominations, including two for Best Supporting Actor. Clemency picked up three, as did Marriage Story. In fact, the latter won the Robert Altman Award for best ensemble cast, director, and casting director. That’s a great sign for its Awards Season chances. All five films should do well when Oscar nominations are announced.

Other nominations that I think will result in more Awards Season glory include Renée Zellweger’s nod for her performance in the titular role in Judy, as well as Jennifer Lopez’s supporting role in Hustlers. There are more nominees that should become regulars on these lists throughout Awards Seasons, but those are the ones that jump out the most.
