Streaming Releases: Grab the Tigertail—or The Tiger and I

April 10, 2020

Coco

As usual, Netflix dominates the list of streaming service debuts this week. A new episode is being released for The Tiger King, which will almost certainly be the most-watched show this weekend. Another tiger-related release from Netflix, Tigertail, is the best-reviewed new release. They aren’t the only new releases worth checking out though. A Celebration of the Music from Coco should please fans of the movie, while Hi Score Girl: Season Two can finally be binged on Netflix.

Movies:

A Celebration of the Music from Coco - No Reviews
Disney+
A live performance of the music of Coco. There are no reviews, but if you liked the music from the movie, then it is worth checking out.

LA Originals - No Reviews
Netflix
A documentary about the street art scene. There are no reviews, so I think it will slip between the cracks.

Love. Wedding. Repeat - Reviews
Netflix
A romantic comedy that is earning terrible reviews. On the other hand, several other Netflix romantic comedies were also panned by critics, but went on to find a receptive audience on Netflix.

The Main Event - Reviews
Netflix
A family film about a kid who wants to become a WWE wrestler. There are only two reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and they are mixed, so I don’t have high hopes for the film’s chances.

School Life - Reviews
Netflix
An inspirational teacher movie set in a small school in France. There’s only one review on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is positive.

Tigertail - Reviews
Netflix
Tzi Ma stars as a man who left China many years ago to move to America for a better life, but it didn’t work out as he planned. This is one of the best releases on this week’s list and Tzi Ma does have more star power than most actors featured on this list have, so perhaps that will help the film find an audience.

Time to Hunt - Reviews
Netflix
A man just getting out of prison hopes to turn his life around, but he and his two friends are chased by an unknown man. There are not a lot of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but the ones there are very positive.

TV Shows:

Brews Brothers: Season One - Reviews
Netflix
A sitcom set in the world of beer-making. There are not many reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and the ones there are mixed, so I don’t have high hopes.

Chris D’Elia: No Pain
Netflix
A stand-up comedy concert from Chris D’Elia. This isn’t his first such special, but it has been a long, long time since I paid attention to stand-up, so I have no idea what he’s like.

The Circle France: Season One
Netflix
A Reality TV show. I’m not a big fan of the genre overall and this show is of a particular subgenre that I actively hate, as it relies on personality conflicts and in nearly every one of these shows there’s not a single person that I have any sympathies for.

Hi Score Girl: Season Two - Reviews
Netflix
A high school romance between two video game enthusiasts. The reviews are great, but I hate Netflix’s release strategy that relies on binge-watching. Some shows are better week-to-week.

The Tiger King and I - Reviews
Netflix
An additional episode of this popular and critically-acclaimed show comes to Netflix on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if this additional episode lives up to the rest of the series. With respect to capitalizing on the hype, the timing couldn’t be better.
