VOD Releases: Trolls Begin a New Tour on VOD

June 24, 2020

Trolls World Tour

Trolls World Tour is easily the biggest release on this week’s list. In fact, it is bigger than the rest of the films combined. That said, while it should entertain kids, it isn’t the best release. The best is a two-way tie between The Ghost of Peter Sellers and Tokyo Olympiad—two documentaries that are worth checking out.

Highlights

Bad Education
Google Play or Vudu
This is a film that could have been a sleeper hit at the box office this summer. In fact, the film’s star power (Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney lead), and its reviews, suggest it could have been an Awards Season contender, if it had opened in the Fall. However, instead it debuted on HBO in April and is hitting other VOD platforms this week. It costs just $10 to buy and if you are a fan of the cast, then it is worth picking up.

The Ghost of Peter Sellers
Amazon, Google Play, or Vudu
In 1973, Peter Sellers was cast to star in a pirate comedy movie, but he decided to just not do his job. In fact, he did everything he could to stop the production of the movie. This documentary discusses what he did and how it affected its director, Peter Medak. It is directed by Peter Medak, so you get direct behind-the-scenes information here, although it is also clearly from his point of view and might not be unbiased. That said, if you like behind-the-scenes documentaries, then this is a must-watch.

Irresistible (Premium VOD)
Vudu
I was so looking forward to this movie. This is a political satire that was written and directed by Jon Stewart and it stars Steve Carell, among others. Unfortunately, its reviews are mixed, which is far below the quality I was expecting. Most critics agree it is not as funny as it should be, nor is the satire nearly as biting as it needs to be. That said, the reviews are not terrible and I might check it out, but I will certainly wait until it is no longer a premium VOD release, because spending $20 for a rental is just asking too much.

Tokyo Olympiad
iTunes
A documentary about the 1968 Tokyo Olympic Games. It was directed by Kon Ichikawa, who wanted to make a documentary to outshine Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia. Unfortunately for him, the Japanese government and the financial backers of this film were not happy with the end result and wanted something that focused less on the athletes, so they got the film cut dramatically for its initial release. Fortunately for us, this is the original nearly three-hour long edition of the film. It is absolutely worth checking out. Personally, I would buy the Blu-ray.

Trolls World Tour
Amazon or iTunes
This film is the biggest hit released during the lockdown and it is finally coming out of PVOD to regular Electronic Sell Through VOD. It still costs about $20, but now you get to keep it. If you have kids of the right age range and you rented the film before and your kids have wanted to watch it again, it is probably worth the money to buy it.
