DEG Watched At Home Chart: Trolls Take Over Top Spot

July 9, 2020

Trolls World Tour

It is clear we are in the pandemic era of the DEG Watched at Home chart, and not just because Trolls World Tour climbed into first place during its first full week on Video on Demand. This also helped Universal lead the way with five entries in the top twenty. The real sign we are in the pandemic era is lower on the chart though.

Yellowstone had the three entries after Trolls, and in the same relative order they were on the chart last week: Season Three, Season One, and then Season Two.

The Outpost managed fifth place. This film was originally scheduled to be a Fathom Events special release, and under normal circumstances there’s no way it would have been the fifth-most-watched movie for the week, either in theaters or on the home market. Its ranking is down to an almost complete lack of competition.

This goes double for Independence Day, which managed 8th place over the week. Granted, the July 4th holiday has boosted this film’s numbers every other year, but not enough to make the top ten. Likewise, there’s no way Jungle Beat: The Movie would have earned 13th place during its debut if there were major competition to deal with, although it’s good to see a smaller family film getting more attention than it otherwise would. This is also a sign that major studios should think about PVOD for family films, as the market clearly has a demand for them right now. Finally, Force of Nature opened in 17th place. Again, had there been the normal level of competition, it wouldn’t even come close to charting.
