Theater counts: Indiana Jones dials up another week as widest release

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will continue into into its sophomore frame with its opening count of 4,600 theaters, once again easily making it the widest release of the week. The latest installment of the beloved adventure franchise turned up $60.37 million in its opening weekend, and currently holds a six-day total of $89.4 million, while bumping the franchise’s worldwide box office to over $2.1 billion. This week it will try to fend off the arrival of two new wide releases, as well as a surprise hit that arrived on the Fourth of July.

Making its start in 3,188 theaters this week is another franchise film in the supernatural horror feature, Insidious: The Red Door. The movie, starring and directed by Patrick Wilson, is the fifth film in the series and is a direct sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2, set ten years after the events of that film. It marks the directorial debut for Wilson and is produced by veteran horror masters Jason Blum and James Wan. Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne, and Lin Shaye co-star.

Also opening in wide release this week is the all-girl road-trip comedy, Joy Ride. The Asian-American comedy follows four friends who set out on a journey across China to find one’s birth mother. Releasing in 2,820 movie houses, the film stars Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu.

Making its foray into theaters on July 4, the action-thriller Sound of Freedom became a surprise story over the Fourth of July Holiday, earning $14.2 million on its opening day (on a $14.5 million budget), edging out Dial of Destiny for the top spot. This weekend the film adds 216 theaters, making itself available in 2,850 movie houses. Based on a true story, the film from Angel Studios follows a federal agent who embarks on a dangerous mission to save a boy from human traffickers.

Rounding out the top five this week is Elemental, showing in 3,440 movie houses, enough for second-widest release this week. In the third slot is another newcomer from last week in Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, available in 3,408 locations, and lastly the $347.89 million domestic earner, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse filling out the fifth spot, playing in 3,023 venues.

Looking ahead to next week, we see the launch of the latest Mission: Impossible film, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One. Also available on IMAX, the action spy film starring a talented ensemble cast and headlined by Tom Cruise is estimated to land in approximately 4,000 theaters in its Wednesday opening. The film is the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible film series with a direct sequel planned for release on June 28, 2024.
