Spider-Man Opens With $59 Million Day

May 5, 2007

Spider-Man 3 swung straight into the record books on Friday, opening with an estimated $59 million, the biggest single day in box office history (see the full list). The new record sets Spidey up for a record-breaking weekend in the region of $140 million, although it will have to maintain its momentum to guarantee breaking the $135.6 million record held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (see the full list).

With a day's performance like this, it goes without saying that Spider-Man performed strongly across the board. IMAX theaters reported record revenues, multiplexes were selling out shows for much of the day, and even smaller venues had good showings. Its international performance was also remarkable, with rumors of the movie earning over $100 million globally in a single day, and setting another new record in the process.

We'll keep you posted as more information comes in over the weekend, and will have Sony's estimate for the weekend as a whole on Sunday morning.
