International Top Five - Smith's Legend Grows

January 24, 2008

I Am Legend has become the third film in Will Smith's career to top $500 million worldwide, which is a very impressive milestone. It was able to reach that mark in part thanks to the film's first place finish on the international charts with $28.12 million on 5,369 screens in 49 markets and now has $260.89 million. The film opened in first place in Mexico with $4.10 million on 450 screens and in Brazil with $2.81 million on 423 screens. In the latter, it earned more than the rest of the top five combined, while in the former it earned more than the top ten combined. While those were impressive starts, the film's best market of the weekend was Germany where it remained in first place with $5.12 million on 717 screens for a total of $17.68 million while in Italy it added $4.26 million on 506 screens for a total of $15.24 million. I Am Legend has yet to open in Russia and a few other markets and should have little trouble hitting $300 million before long.

Alien vs. Predator: Requiem climbed into second place with $11.24 million on 2,730 screens in 44 markets for a total of $69.08 million and topped $100 million worldwide early in the weekend. It was able to top the charts in the U.K. with a surprisingly vital $3.84 million on 399 screens. However, it flopped in South Korea with just $761,000 on 164 screens over the weekend and $921,000 in total.

Alvin And The Chipmunks was flat this week, adding $10.14 million on 3662 screens in 38 markets for a total of $95.20 million. Even with no major openings next week, it should still have no trouble reaching $100 million internationally by then. However, we are getting ahead of ourselves and this past weekend the film debuted in fourth place in Italy with $1.81 million on just 256 screens, which is better than expected.

American Gangster climbed into the top five for the first time in many weeks as it opened in Italy. It captured $4.17 million on 457 screens there, and missed first place by less than $100,000. Overall, the film earned $9.14 million on 1658 screens in 37 markets for a total of $93.04 million internationally and $223.01 million worldwide.

Rounding out the top five was P.S. I Love You, which double its weekend haul with $8.92 million on 1,438 screens in 13 markets for an early total of $31.11 million. This growth was powered by the film's second place, $4.81 million opening on 494 screens in Germany while it was down just 18% to $2.31 million on 367 screens in the U.K. for a total of $14.12 million after three weeks of wide release (and two weeks of limited release before that). Next up is Italy at the beginning of February and France the week after that.
