International Details - Island Scores Solid Sixth in Debut
Nim's Island made its first push onto the international chart landing in sixth place with $4.53 million on 970 screens in 7 markets for a very early total of $5.64 million. The film opened in first place in Italy with $1.71 million on 304 screens while it expanded into fourth place in Australia with $780,000 on 196 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.69 million after two. The film also made its debut in France with $1.65 million on 399 screens, which was only enough for fifth place. Nim's Island is using a graduated release schedule and doesn't have a major opening for the rest of the month. On the other hand, it has major openings practically every month right through till the end of summer.
- The Spiderwick Chronicles fell out of the top five adding $4.26 million on 2937 screens in 49 markets for a total of $66.24 million. It was hurt by no major openings this week, but that won't be a problem next time around with the opening in France while it debuts in Japan at the end of the month.
- Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon fell from third to eighth but still added $3.93 million on 1096 screens in 6 markets for a total of $16.28 million. At this pace, it will match its $20 million production budget next week and should show a healthy profit, especially if it can expand outside of its native markets.
- Shutter landed on the international top 30 for the first time during its run earning ninth place with $3.20 million on 1133 screens in 17 markets for a total of $6.87 million so far. It opened in third place in Spain with $1.40 million on 400 screens, but that is weak for the genre for the market. It did place second in Mexico with $755,000 on 372 screens, but that was thanks mostly to weak competition (there have only been three big releases in the past three weeks there).
- The Game Plan bombed in France missing the top ten with just $449,000 on 219 screens. However, it climbed into the top ten overall with $3.19 million on 1424 screens in 13 markets for a total of $47.50 million.
- 10,000 B.C. fell faster than expected down 50% to 11th place, however, it still topped $250 million worldwide. Internationally it made $2.92 million on 2804 screens in 59 markets for a total of $160.41 million, and has yet to open in Japan.
- Jumper also tumbled down to $2.85 million on 1794 screens in 16 markets for a total of $134.94 million. The film is coasting on holdovers at the moment, but with a total of more than $200 million worldwide, the studio should be happy regardless of how fast it disappears from now on.
- Vantage Point's international numbers have surpassed its domestic total, but it lacks major markets to go much further. Over the weekend it earned $2.67 million on 1666 screens in 53 markets for a total of $72.71 million.
- Krazzy 4 opened in 14th place with $2.58 million on 742 screens in 16 markets, which is a little disappointing compared to the average Indian release recently.
- The Kite Runner fell to 15th place with $2.45 million on 860 screens in 26 markets for a total of $51.38 million. Most of that came from the film's third weekend in Italy where it added $1.68 million on 370 screens for a total of $9.60 million.
- Leatherheads opened in 16th place with $2.31 million on 553 screens in 4 markets over the weekend for a total of $2.51 million. This includes a weaker than expected opening in the U.K. ($936 million on 335 screens) and a stronger than expected opening in Italy ($1.23 million on 218 screens).
- Untraceable earned $2.29 million on 1090 screens in 16 markets for a total of $14.49 million so far. It opened in Japan last weekend bombing with just $341,000 on 137 screens, which was only enough for 10th place.
- Taken returned to the charts in 18th place with $2.23 million on 346 screens in 2 markets for a total of $11.79 million. Most of its weekend haul came from South Korea where it earned first place and $2.02 million on 326 screens over the weekend and $2.88 million in total. On the other hand, more than $9 million of its total came from its native market of France.
- Juno is coasting on holdovers at the moment earning $2.23 million on 1087 screens in 19 markets for a total of $79.32 million. This includes Italy where is was down just 23% to $673,000 on 236 screens for a two-week total of $1.91 million.
- The Eye returned tot the charts in 20th place with $2.19 million on 789 screens in 26 markets for a total of $15.47 million so far. Its big opening of the weekend came in France where it earned $1.06 million on 180 screens; this was only enough for seventh place in the market, but that wasn't as bad as it could have been.
- U, Me Aur Hum opened in 21st place with $2.18 million on 641 screens in 15 markets, which is disappointing for an Indian film.
- Fool's Gold opened in a number of smaller markets and that helped it slide just 8% this weekend to $2.15 million on 838 screens in 24 markets for a running tally of $15.68 million. It has a string of major openings in the next few weeks, but it might be too late to salvage its run.
- 27 Dresses fell more than 10 spots to 23rd with $2.09 million on 822 screens in 14 markets for a total of $69.16 million. Next up for the film is China and France next weekend, while it doesn't open in Japan till the end of next month.
- The Other Boleyn Girl added $2.00 million on 802 screens in 19 markets for a total of $31.41 million. Its run isn't over, but its hard to imagine it will turn its fortunes around now.
- Jalsa held on very well for an Indian film down just 13% during its sophomore stint. Over the weekend it made $1.90 million on 633 screens in 11 markets for a total of $7.19 million, which is still below average.
- Les Randonneurs A Saint-Tropez debuted in 4th place in France with $1.71 million on 520 screens while it placed 26th overall with $1.82 million on 545 screens in 2 markets during its opening weekend.
- Masked Rider: Den-o & Kiva opened with $1.77 million on 136 screens, which was enough for first place in Japan and 27th place overall.
- Definitely, Maybe returned to the charts in 28th place thanks to a fifth place opening in South Korea. There the film made $325,000 on 178 screens over the weekend and $648,000 in total, while overall it made $1.72 million on 709 screens in 23 markets for a total of $15.68 million.
- Superhero Movie climbed into the charts for the first time scoring 29th place with $1.71 million on 450 screens in 8 markets for a still very early international total of $5.21 million. The film debuted in second place in Australia with $918,000 on 188 screens over the weekend, which works out to a $10 million opening once you take into account the relative size of the two markets.
- The final film to chart was The Bucket List with $1.63 million on 756 screens in 32 markets for a total of $63.11 million. It earned sixth place in South Korea with $300,000 on 79 screens over the weekend and $484,000 in total, while it has yet to open in Japan and does so in May.
