DVD Sales - Indiana Jones and the Millions of Sales

October 28, 2008

There were more than half-a-dozen new releases to reach the top 30 on this week's sales chart, including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That film topped the charts with 3.03 million units sold for sales of $70.57 million. However, the Franchise Collection placed sixth with 177,000 units sold and $10.85 million in sales. Add in the individual releases and the total sales were more than $80 million from 3.3 million units sold.

Iron Man remained in second place with 545,000 units / $10.01 million for the week and 6.88 million units / $129.24 million after three. It is the best selling DVD of the year, so far. Sleeping Beauty slipped to third place selling 424,000 units for the week giving the latest DVD release $29.24 million in sales from 1.76 million units sold. You Don't Mess With the Zohan held strong in fourth place down less than 50% to 250,000 units for the week and 749,000 after two giving it sales of $16.92 million. Falling to fifth place was The Happening with just 227,000 units sold for the week lifting its sales to 880,000 units and $19.94 million.

There were several other new releases to chart this week, but only one of them, Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie, was a wide release. That movie sold 52,000 units generating $1.14 million in revenue, which was disappointing compared to expectations. CSI - Season Eight was just behind with 51,000 units sold, however, thanks to its hefty TV on DVD price-tag, it generated $3.01 million in sales, which was eighth best for the week. Down in 18th place was Mongol with 39,000 units / $857,000 in sales. The Unit was the second TV on DVD release to chart coming in 22nd place with 37,000 units sold earning $1.03 million in sales. Finally, War, Inc. was the final release to chart coming in 27th place with 33,000 units / $508,000 in sales for the first week. This is almost as much as the movie made during its entire limited release run, which is impressive.

Blu-ray sales bounced back this week with the released of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Sales were up 25% to $17.9 million, which was 12.2% of total sales and 11% of the top 20 comparison. This is the second best week for Blu-ray sales, just behind Iron Man's opening weekend sales. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the biggest seller on the Blu-ray charts with about 300,000 units sold, which makes it the second fastest Blu-ray seller ever, behind just Iron Man, which added close to 100,000 units in sales this past week.
