Per Theater Chart: Midnight Burns Bright

May 24, 2011

Midnight in Paris had the best per screen average for the year so far and came within a rounding error of topping $100,000. The film opened with $599,003 in 6 theaters for an average of $99,834, which represents a career best for Woody Allen. Add in its Oscar-worthy reviews, and there's no telling where it could go. The overall number one film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was the only other film to crack $10,000 on the per theater chart, as it opened with an average of $21,697.

Other new limited releases were not as fortunate with the best of the rest, 35 and Ticking, well back at just shy of $30,000 in six theaters for an average of $4,963. This is actually better than I thought it would do. (The total lack of reviews before the weekend was a bad sign.) Louder Than A Bomb missed the Mendoza Line, but it was close with an average of $1,900 in three theaters. Bloodworth was not close with an average of $961 in ten theaters. Meanwhile, Cost of a Soul bombed, with an average of $507 in 50 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • There Be Dragons topped $1 million since this time last week. It took less than two weeks to reach that milestone, which would normally be a good sign. However, it's all but evaporated from theaters after a middling start.
  • Bill Cunningham New York took the long route to get to $1 million, as it was in theaters for more than two months before it hit its first major milestone. However, it too will go no further.
  • On the other hand, Everything Must Go was the third film to reach $1 million since this time last week, and it is likely it will surpass $2 million by this time next week.
  • Born to be Wild 3D made it to $5 million since this time last week, and while that's likely as far as it will go, that's still a solid hit for limited release.
