International Box Office: Gravity Orbits a Milestone
For the third weekend in a row, Gravity led the way on the international chart and reached a major milestone in the process. This past weekend, it pulled in $33.5 million on 7,900 screens in 51 markets for an international total of $114.2 million and a worldwide total $283.8 million. It opened in first place in two major markets led by South Korea where it earned $6.30 million on 636 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.29 million. Meanwhile in Mexico, it made $5.75 million on 1,783 screens. Its biggest market overall is Russia where it has earned $17.60 million in total, including $2.19 million on 700 screens this past weekend.
The Wolverine returned to the chart in second place with $17.60 million over the weekend in 4,902 screens, all of which were in China, giving the film a total of $262.8 million on the international box office. Worldwide, the film has $394.9 million. On a side note, the film already has more than twice as much in China as it made in total in Japan, and the film is set in Japan.
Turbo returned to the top ten in third place with $16.5 million on 5,143 screens in 20 markets for totals of $143.8 million internationally and $226.4 million worldwide. The film had a trio of first place debuts in major markets, starting with the U.K., where it made $6.29 million on 528 screens. In France, it generated $4.13 million on 684 screens, while in Spain it managed $1.73 million on 636.
Stalingrad fell from second place to fourth place with $12.56 million on 1,671 screens in 2 markets for a two-week total of $36.34 million. It remained in first place in its native Russia with $11.70 million on 1500 screens over the weekend for a total of $33.71 million after two. The rest came from the Ukraine.
Special ID debuted in second place in China with $10.87 million, while in total it debuted with $12.5 million in 6 markets, which was enough for fifth place internationally.
Escape Plan reached the top ten of the first time with $9.4 million in 34 markets for an early total of $14.1 million. Its best market with the U.K., where it managed third place with $1.55 million on 362 screens, which is roughly equivalent to its opening here.
Captain Phillips also entered the top ten for the first time, earning seventh place with $9.29 million on 1,923 screens in 17 markets for an early total of $9.37 million. This includes a second place, $4.89 million opening on 722 screens in the U.K. and another second place, $1.40 million opening on 413 screens in Spain.
Despicable Me 2 landed in eighth place with $8.3 million on 2,571 screens in 33 markets for totals of $535.85 million internationally and $899.60 million worldwide. It remained in first place in Italy with $5.05 million on 844 screens for a two-week total of $13.65 million.
Prisoners slipped to ninth place with $7.3 million in 49 markets for a total of $34.3 million at the international box office. The film opened in Australia, but only managed third place with $1.06 million on 206 screens. It also only managed third place in Brazil with $780,000 on 218 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $811,000.
Insidious: Chapter 2 rounded out the top ten with $6.45 million on 2,465 screens in 33 markets for a total of $46.73 million. The film was a huge hit here, but is struggling internationally. This is better than the other way around, as the studio gets a much larger percentage of the box office domestically than it does internationally.
