International Box Office: Jack Reaches for the Top earning $31.5 million
October 27, 2016
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opened in first place internationally with $31.5 million in 31 markets. Its biggest market was China, where it earned $5.56 million, including previews. The film’s second biggest market was in the U.K. where it earned $3.28 million in 519 theaters. This is lower than it opened here, given the relative size of the two markets, and much lower than the $5.75 million the first film opened with. Granted, that film opened in the U.K. right around Christmas, but overall Never Go Back is underperforming. This is really bad news for Paramount Pictures, as they’ve had a bad year with a number of high-profile, high-cost movies failing to break even and really can’t afford another misstep.
Inferno slipped to second place with $28.9 million over the weekend in 58 markets for a two-week total of $94.8 million internationally. This is likely close to what the film cost to make. The film managed second place during its opening in South Korea with $2.66 million over the weekend for a total opening of $3.49 million. This is on par with most of the rest of the film’s international openings. That’s not really a compliment, however, and it is very unlikely to match the previous films in the franchise.
Mechanic: Resurrection entered the top five for the first time in its run earning third place with $24 million in 26 markets for an international total of $50 million. $24.26 million was earned during the film’s first place debut in China. I know it looks like the film earned more in China that it did worldwide, but that’s due to rounding issues. The film is about to overtake the original at the worldwide box office, so there could be another film in the franchise, but one that doesn’t even open wide in North America.
Trolls started its international run in fourth place with $18.0 million. Its biggest market was the U.K., where it earned first place with $6.64 million in 608 theaters, which is equivalent to a $35 million to $40 million opening here. Likewise, the film’s $4.2 million opening in France suggests a $35 million opening here.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children rounded out the top five with $13.5 million in 64 markets over the weekend for totals of $150.0 million internationally and $224.3 million worldwide. The film has earned enough worldwide to either pay for its entire production budget, or come very close. Additionally, it has yet to open in China, Italy, and Japan, so it still has some box office potential left. I wouldn’t call it a monster hit, but it should break even sooner rather than later.
Finding Dory continued its march to overtake Zootopia for second place on the yearly worldwide chart. This past weekend, it added $4.0 million in 14 markets for totals of $532.2 million internationally and $1.018 billion worldwide. By this time next week, it should be in second place for the year and 24th place all time.
