Awards Season - Hat Trick Of Guild Nominations

January 9th, 2009

The final guild nominations were recently announced, and there are several theatrical categories to get to. The three guilds, DGA, PGA, and WGA, announced out eight nominations in total, which really help to fill in the gaps for prediction the Oscar nods. Or in some cases, just make matters more confusing. DVD Releases for November 18, 2008 - Part I

November 18th, 2008

It's a weird week for the DVD release report. According to Amazon, seven of the top ten releases come from two movies: WALL-E and Tropic Thunder. Add in the Spanish language edition and there are five versions of the former movie coming out this week, including the 3-Disc DVD and the 3-Disc Blu-ray, either one of which is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. The overall group of releases feels weaker than last week, but it is more than enough that it had to be split into two parts. Part two can be found here. More...

Summer Starts to Wind Down on the Per Theater Chart

August 12th, 2008

Elegy topped the charts with more than $100,000 in 6 theaters for an average of $17,361. The only other film to top $10,000 was Beautiful Losers, which barely crossed that milestone with $10,607 in one theater. More...

Per Theater Chart goes a Little Wacky

July 8th, 2008

The Wackness opened in first place on the per theater chart with an average of $23,067. But I'm going to wait to see how well it expands before judging its chances of becoming this year's sleeper hit. After all, so many limited releases have failed to make it there this year. Second place went to fellow limited release, Tell No One, which opened with an estimated average of $21,250 in 8 theaters. The overall box office leader, Hancock, was the only other new release to top $10,000 on the per theater chart -- it earned an average of $15,789. More...

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of July 4, 2008

July 6th, 2008

There were a couple of sites that were in contention for the Weekly Website Award, including one of the limited releases. It is not that common for a limited release to have a top notch site, because the advertising budget tends to be as limited as its screen count. However, while The Wackness' Official Site stood out from the crowd, Hancock's Official Site was deemed the best of the week. More...

Limited Releases go Kabluey

July 4th, 2008

The long weekend didn't result in a long list of limited releases. That said, there are a few releases that have a shot at succeeding in limited release, even if I wouldn't be willing to wager any of them will escape to the multiplexes. More...
