The Truths about Cars and Averages

Cars not only won the overall box office title, but was one of only two films to top $10,000 on the per theatre charts this weekend earning $15,086. The other film was last week's winner, An Inconvenient Truth, which managed an average of $12,334 in 122 theatres during its third weekend of release.

None of this week's batch of new limited releases were able to crack $10,000, but Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul (not Constantinople), came close with $9,161. The same can't be said for either The Heart of the Game or Autumn with disappointing averages of $3,750 and $3,600 respectively. And on the very low end we have Agnes and His Brothers at $1,544 and Psychopathia Sexualis at $537.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theatre Charts alumni:

  • The Proposition had the best weekend of its run topping $1 million along the way.
  • Water made it to $2 million over the weekend, and while it has peaked for sure, it should still make it to $3 million before its run is over.
  • Art School Confidential reach $3 million very early during the midweek, but that's as far as it's going to go.
  • Keeping Up with the Steins did surpass $3 million over the weekend and should have enough to hit $4 million before long.
  • For the second weekend in a row An Inconvenient Truth earned more than $1 million and this led to it hitting yet another milestone. This time it was the $3 million mark, but it has assuredly topped $4 million by Monday.
(On a side note, if you can't figure out the pun in the headline, here's a hint.)
