International Details - Losing Blood

The Blood Diamond fell from second to sixth this past weekend, mainly due to the lack of new openings. The film still pulled $8.52 million on 3409 screens in 59 markets for a total of $77.51 million and is still on pace for $100 million internationally, but that's the last milestone in its future.

  • Hannibal Rising fell out of the top five after just one week down 28% to $8.01 million on 2547 screens for a two-week total of $22.81 million. New openings this week include Germany where the film managed $1.43 million on 519 screens. Meanwhile, the film's best market was Italy where it was down 46% during its second weekend with $1.56 million on 358 screens for a $5.54 million total so far.
  • It was a milestone weekend for The Pursuit Of Happyness, which crossed the $100 million market despite falling out of the top five. Over the weekend it pulled in $7.85 million on 2939 screens in 50 markets for a running tally of $106.14 million. This is the fourth film in a row for Will Smith to manage that feat and the tenth of his career. Not many actors have the consistent drawing power he does.
  • The Italian film, Notte Prima Degli Esami: Oggi, opened in its native market with just shy of $6.00 million on 604 screens over the weekend and $7.62 million in total. That was enough for first place locally and ninth place overall.
  • Music and Lyrics grew by 50% during its second weekend on the international charts, but still fell two spots to tenth place. The film had good mix of new openings and holdovers scoring a close second place in Australia with $1.76 million on 275 screens, (it's $2.35 million since Wednesday would have been more than enough for top spot), while it did rule in New Zealand, ($150,000 on 44 screens over the weekend and $199,000 in total). In the U.K. the film was down only 24% to $2.86 million on 432 screens for a two-week total of $10.19 million. Overall the film made $5.65 million on 960 screens in 8 markets for a total of $13.91 million and should have little difficulty keeping pace with its domestic run.
  • Charlotte's Web is finally a hit in an international market as it remained flat in the U.K. adding $3.69 million on 495 screens for a two-week total of $12.07 million. On the other hand, the film crashed and burned in its opening in Finland making just $45,000 on 30 screens, and that includes previews. Overall it added $5.47 million on 2099 screens in 45 markets for a total of $43.44 million.
  • Rocky Balboa just can't seem to hold onto its audiences anywhere. For instances, the film was down 58% during its second weekend in Germany with $1.52 million on 554 screens; however, that was still enough for the film to remain in first place in the market and lifts its total to $5.83 million after two weeks. On the other hand, the film managed just 8th place in South Korea with $607,000 on 206 screens over the weekend and $1,10 million in total. Overall it made $3.77 million on 1953 screens for a total of $63.70 million.
  • Eklavya - The Royal Guard was the latest Bollywood film to do well on the international charts opening with $3.72 million on 583 screens. This includes $319,000 on 40 screens in the U.K.
  • Dreamgirls hasn't been able to break into the international market yet adding $3.63 million on 1363 screens to its total of $19.13 million after a month of release. This includes a second place, $1.70 million debut on 287 screens in Japan, which is behind the $2.36 million on 259 screens Chicago earned and way behind the $3.26 million on 269 screens earned by The Phantom of the Opera. Both of those films cracked $100 million internationally, but that might not be in the cards for Dreamgirls.
  • Miracle On 1st Street was the latest local film to top the charts in South Korea opening with $3.21 million on 390 screens over the weekend and $5.973 million in total.
  • Arthur And The Invisibles added $3.19 million in 1396 screens for a total of $78.82 million internationally.
  • Babel fell to 17th with $2.49 million on 1379 screens for an international total of $71.60 million.
  • Epic Movie earned $2.42 million on 670 screens in 12 markets for a still early international total of $14.01 million.
  • Notes On A Scandal climbed into the top 20 with $2.25 million on 406 screens for a very early international total of $8.89 million. This includes a third place, $786,000 opening on 101 screens in Australia while its biggest market overall was the U.K. where it added $980,000 on 267 screens to its total of $7.54 million there.
  • Bok-Myun-Dal-Ho, a.k.a. Highway Star, opened in South Korea with $2.16 million on 332 screens over the weekend and $3.99 million in total. That was enough for second place locally and 20th place internationally.
  • The Last King Of Scotland returned to the charts with $1.89 million on 594 screens in 36 markets for a total of $12.89 million. The film landed in 10th place in France with $581,000 on 103 screens and 13th in Italy with $173,000 on 49.
  • Dororo remained in first place in Japan for the fourth week in a row as it pulled in $1.77 million on 296 screens for a total of $20.35 million after four weeks of release.
  • The Good Shepherd started its international run in six markets earning $1.72 million on 383 screens. This includes fourth place in Australia with $756,000 on 197 screens and fifth place in Germany with $757,000 on 136 screens.
  • A Day For An Affair fell from first to third in South Korea with $1.71 million on 326 screens over the weekend and $8.62 million in total.
  • The Holiday is shedding screens and markets as it plummeted from 12th to 25th with $1.68 million on 859 screens in 35 markets for a total of $123.93 million. This included $1.26 million on 319 screens during its second weekend in Italy while its total there grew to $3.98 million.
  • Die Wilden Kerle 4 had a tough week down 53% to $1.56 million on 858 screens, $1.34 million on 716 screens coming from Germany. So far the film has made $10.12 million in that market and just under $12.00 million in total.
  • Letters From Iwo Jima returned to the charts with $1.50 million on 539 screens in 19 markets for a total of $42.57 million. The film opened in semi-limited release in a number of markets, including Italy where it just missed the top ten with $213,000 on 47 screens.
  • Voice Of A Murderer is the fourth South Korea on this week's chart as the movie made $1.44 million on 285 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $18.35 million.
  • Odette Toulemonde fell 10 places to 29th with $1.41 million on 345 screens including $1.32 million on 321 screens in France. The film now has $3.88 million after two weeks in that market and $4.15 million in total.
  • The Queen clung to the final spot in the top 30 with $1.36 million on 832 screens for a total of $48.71 million.
  • Casino Royale may have fallen out of the top 30, but it was very close with $1.30 million on 96 screens while its total has not reached $423.63 million. Its worldwide total is now $590.30 million, but it has fallen off the pace for both milestones it was looking for, (20th place internationally and $600 million worldwide). However, this film made enough profit to pay for the next two Bond movies, so no one is complaining.
  • Bridge to Terabithia started its international run in South Korea, not a country known for being box office friendly to Hollywood films. However it topped the list of such releases in the market this week earning sixth place with $693,000 on just 134 screens over the weekend and $1.25 million in total. It has a few midlevel openings this weekend but doesn't really get going till March while it continues its slow role out throughout the summer.
