Synopsis

Julia Jarmond, an American journalist married to a Frenchman, is commissioned to write an article about the notorious Vel d'Hiv round up, which took place in Paris, in 1942. She stumbles upon a family secret which will link her forever to the destiny of a young Jewish girl, Sarah. Julia learns that the apartment she and her husband Bertrand plan to move into was acquired by Bertrand's family when its Jewish occupants were dispossessed and deported 60 years before. She resolves to find out what happened to the former occupants: Wladyslaw and Rywka Starzynski, parents of 10-year-old Sarah and four-year-old Michel. The more Julia discovers - especially about Sarah, the only member of the Starzynski family to survive - the more she uncovers about Bertrand's family, about France and, finally, herself.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 22nd, 2011

November 22nd, 2011

It's kind of a slow week on the home market in two ways. Firstly, the only major release of the week is Super 8. Secondly, half the releases I was supposed to review are running late. Fortunately, Super 8 is a top notch film and the Blu-ray Combo Pack is this week's Pick of the Week. More...

Per Theater Chart: Detective Dee on the Case

September 7th, 2011

The per theater chart is nearly empty and only Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame topping $10,000 over the three-day portion of the weekend. It's average from Friday through Sunday was $17,533 in three theaters. Bodyguard earned an average of $9,813 in 88 theaters over the three-day portion of the weekend, but crossed over the $10,000 mark if you include Monday. It was even more impressive if you take into account its Wednesday and Thursday numbers. More...

Per Theater Chart: Weather Dampens Specialty Releases

August 30th, 2011

Normally I disregard weather effects on the box office; after all, even big storms generally only affect a small fraction of the population of the domestic market. However, Irene caused theaters in New York City to be closed for Saturday and Sunday, which had a huge impact on limited releases and none of the new ones reached that $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Red State did earn that much in its lone theater over the weekend, while the closest any new release came was Higher Ground with an average of $7,165 in three theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart: State Makes Senna See Red

August 24th, 2011

Red State continued its run of special engagements this past weekend earning $25,800 in one theater. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was Senna, which earned an average of $11,365 in 14 theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart: Senna Races to the Top

August 16th, 2011

Senna easily won the race to the top of the per theater chart with an average of $36,749 in two theaters. The next best was way back, as CornerStore earned $12,743 in its lone theater. The only other film in the $10,000 club was The Help at $10,278. More...

Per Theater Chart: Apes Conquer Crowded Field

August 9th, 2011

Just as it led the overall box office chart, Rise of the Planet of the Apes led the per theater chart with an average of $15,024. Gun Hill Road was in second place with an average of $12,609, which put it just ahead of El Bulli: Cooking in Progress's haul of $12,149 in its lone theater. Bellflower's amazing reviews helped it earn an average of $11,140 in two theaters. The final member of the $10,000 club was The Guard with an average of $10,209 in 19 theaters. It should still find room to expand while reaching at least one major milestone is likely. More...

The Future of the Per Theater Chart

Miranda July's second film, The Future, opened about as well as her first film, Me and You and Everyone We Know, did. It earned $27,137 in its lone theater, which was enough for top spot on the per theater chart and suggests a strong potential for expansion. The Devil's Double and The Guard were in a virtual tie with averages of $19,283 and $19,209 respectively. Attack the Block was one of the wider limited releases of the week, and it had the biggest opening in terms of raw dollars. Furthermore, its average of $17,198 suggest potential to expand. El Bulli: Cooking in Progress opened in one theater earning $12,756 over the weekend and $20,699 since Wednesday. Sarah's Key expanded from 5 theaters to 33, but still managed a very strong per theater average of $11,112. The final film to cross the $10,000 per theater average was The Smurfs at $10,489. More...

Captain America: The First Avenger led the way on the overall chart and earned an average of $17,512 on the per theater chart. Weekend Estimates: Captain America Neck-and-Neck with Thor for Superhero Honors

July 24th, 2011

After last week's fireworks, this weekend was another good one for the industry thanks to a better-than-expected opening for Captain America: The First Avenger. The superhero movie is set to gross about $65.8 million at the box office this weekend, which is almost exactly the same as Thor's $65.7 million opening back in May. Captain's estimate does rely on a slightly better Sunday than Thor, so it might not quite top the list of superhero opening weekends in 2011, but the difference will basically be a rounding error. What was billed as a potentially close race for top spot this weekend turned in to a very one-sided battle, with Deathly Hallows dropping a steep 72% from its massive opening to an estimated $48.1 million. $274 million after 10 days is still a best for the franchise, however. Limited Releases Could Use a Little Help

July 22nd, 2011

There are several limited releases on this week's list with reviews that are good, but not many that have reviews that are great. Myth of the American Sleepover is that one film with great reviews and with strong buzz it could have the best shot at breakout success. However, it might not be the only one. More...

More...
