Awards Season - Oscar Nods far from Curious

January 22nd, 2009

For a year without an obvious front-runner for the Oscar race, there were not a whole lot of surprises when it came to the nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominations today and leading the way was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with thirteen while Slumdog Millionaire was second with ten. 2008 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part III

December 19th, 2008

This week on our annual Holiday Gift Guide we look at limited releases and foreign imports, including a bit of Canadian content. This list was supposed to be online on Wednesday, but it is winter and I live in Canada, and a storm came by and took out the power. I don't know how long it lasted, because as soon as I powered down my computer (battery back-up rocks) I went to bed. I figure if I can't check my e-mail, there's no point in being conscious. Hopefully part four will be online on Sunday. Although there is another storm heading in for that day as well. More...

Awards Season - Ballast, River, and Rachel Getting Nominations

December 2nd, 2008

It's the official start of award season as the Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced today. At first glance, no one film jumps out as the big player, but Frozen River did manage to pull in seven nods, while Rachel Getting Married and Ballast earned six each. More...

DVD Releases for November 18, 2008 - Part I

November 18th, 2008

It's a weird week for the DVD release report. According to Amazon, seven of the top ten releases come from two movies: WALL-E and Tropic Thunder. Add in the Spanish language edition and there are five versions of the former movie coming out this week, including the 3-Disc DVD and the 3-Disc Blu-ray, either one of which is worthy of the DVD Pick of the Week. The overall group of releases feels weaker than last week, but it is more than enough that it had to be split into two parts. Part two can be found here. More...

Kit the Smart Choice on the Per Theater Chart

June 24th, 2008

The prestige release of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl went smashingly as it topped the per theater chart with an outstanding average of $44,059, which bodes very well for its expansion on Friday. Meanwhile, Encounters at the End of the World grew by more than 4% to earn $18,519 in its lone theater. On a side note, Get Smart, which won the race to the top of the overall box office chart came within a hair of the $10,000 club with an average of $9,891. More...

Genghis Khan Encounters Little Resistance on the Per Theater Chart

June 17th, 2008

Mongol repeated atop the Per Theater Chart with an average of $22,442 in five theaters, which was 17% lower than its opening. Now the next big test is how well it can expand. The second best release of the week was Encounters at the End of the World as the documentary earned $17,730 in its lone theater. Even more impressive is the fact that the film was a Wednesday release that earned nearly $26,000 in total -- had it opened on Friday it might has topped the charts. The overall number one film, The Incredible Hulk debuted in third place on the per theater chart with $15,810. Next up was The Grocer's Son, which grew more than 30% to $13,789 in one theater. The final film to earn $10,000 or more during its run was The Happening, which surprised analysts with an average of $10,220 in just under 3,000 theaters.

Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of June 13, 2008

June 15th, 2008

Not a terribly busy week in terms of new releases, which obviously limits the number of sites on this week's list. Additionally, there's only one site that was even remotely better than average: The Incredible Hulk - Official Site. Fortunately, it is up to the level of a Weekly Website Award winner. More...
