Gran Torino was able to top all new releases to earn first place on this week's DVD sales chart.
It was able to do this with sales of 1.44 million units and $19.40 million for the week, which represents just a 45% drop-off for the week, and 4.05 million units and $62.33 million in total, which is in the top five for the year.

A strangely busy week for spotlight reviews with ten of them representing nine DVDs and seven Blu-rays. It would have been a bigger list, but several are late. As for the best of the best, I'm giving an tentative DVD Pick of the Week rating to Transformers - Generation One - 25th Anniversary Edition - Season One. However, those will to wait for the retail version of Matrix of Leadership - Complete Series, or willing to spend more on the limited release will want to give this one a pass. Additionally, we have a DVD Puck of the Week, as the Canadian release, Murdoch Mysteries - Season One, is a must have for all loyal Canucks. Confessions Of A Shopaholic nearly doubled its weekend haul as it pulled in $6.78 million on 2023 screens in 26 markets for a total of $31.91 million after a month of release. The film opened in first place in Australia, no surprise there, as that's the home of Isla Fisher, with $1.89 million on 309 screens. It earned a nearly identical result of $1.84 million on 426 screens in Germany, but that was only enough for third place in that market. Next up for the film is South Korea and Spain at the end of this month, while it doesn't end its run till the end of May when it opens in Japan and France.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic expanded this past weekend jumping into sixth place with $6.13 million on 1365 screens in 10 markets for a total of $10.05 million. This includes a second place, $2.80 million opening on 424 screens over the weekend in the U.K., for a total of $4.14 million there. The film also held well in Russia down just 42% with $1.04 million on 415 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.41 million after two.

The Oscars combined with the post-holiday weekend left the overall box office dramatically lower this weekend compared to last. In fact, it was down 24% to $142 million; however, compared to the same weekend last year, that was up by just under 30%. Year-to-date, 2009 has pulled in $1.65 billion, which is 23% above last year's pace of $1.34 billion. There's no way 2009 can keep up this pace for too much longer, but each weekend it does will help future box office scores. After all, a lot of people see trailers, posters, and other advertisements for the first time when going to the movie theaters. More free advertising now will turn into more people going to the theaters later on.

Madea Goes to Jail dominated Oscar weekend at the movies with an impressive $41.1 million opening, according to Lionsgate's Sunday estimate.
That's a record for Perry, topping the $30 million debut of
Madea's Family Reunion two years ago.
Even after factoring in the exhibitor's share of box office,
Madea Goes to Jail has already recovered its $17.5 million production budget.

The Oscars are being handed out this weekend, which means a lot of moviegoers will be more interested in watching the ceremonies on TV than going to the theaters. Studios know this, which explains the weak slate of movies coming out this week. In fact, there's only one film opening truly wide this week, and only one other that comes close. That said, it's still better than last year and 2009 should continue its amazing pace.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button isn't exactly bringing in the Benjamins, at least not internationally, but it is brining in the Euros and the Pounds, and the Wons. In total it made $30.49 million on 5669 screens in 49 markets for a total of $119.56 million internationally, which is nearly as much as the film has made domestically. The film opened in first place in Italy with $3.84 million on 477 screens, while it also topped the charts in South Korea with $1.84 million on 382 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.14 million. Holdovers were led by France, where the film added $4.19 million on 579 screens for a total of $10.87 million, while it climbed to first in Japan with $3.03 million on 426 screens over the weekend and $11.30 million after two. The film was solid in both the U.K. ($2.52 million on 419 screens) and in Germany ($2.49 million on 590 screens). The film now has totals of $7.27 million after two weeks in the former and $13.56 million after three weeks in the latter.

Gomorrah led the way on the per theater chart this weekend with an average of $15,540 in seven theaters. Second place went to Two Lovers with an average of $13,569, proving yet again there is no such thing as bad publicity. Under the Sea 3-D opened with $13,490, and it should be in theaters for at least a year, if not two. The final film in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Friday the 13th, which opened with an average of $13,066 in more than 3,000 theaters.

Another record breaking weekend! President's Day long weekend smashed the previous record with a total of $188 million over three days and $220 million over four. To put this into perspective, the previous record was set in 2007 when the box office pulled in $187 million in four days. That's right, this year we earned more in three days than the previous record was over four. It goes without saying that there were huge increases over last weekend (up 22%) and over the same weekend last year (up 37% over three days and 33% over four).
Year to date, 2009 has pulled in $1.47 billion, 22% ahead of last year's $1.20 billion pace.

The theatrical market continued its remarkable run with another record-breaking weekend, based on studio estimates released on Monday.
Friday the 13th led with a four-day estimate of $45.2 million, the second-best Presidents' Weekend opening ever.
He's Just Not That Into You fell 29% from its opening and earned $23.4 million Friday-to-Monday, giving Warner Bros. a one-two finish.
Taken lands in third place with an estimated $22.2 million, while Coraline takes fourth with $19.1 million; both movies fell less than 10% from last weekend, based on a three-day comparison

It might be hard for the box office to keep pace with last year, as the three new releases from this week don't seem as strong as the four new releases were last year. Perhaps with Valentine's Day landing on a Saturday in 2009 will help the year continue to expand its lead over 2008.

Next week it's Friday the 13th, and if that wasn't scary enough, the next day it's Valentine's day. Aahhhhhh! We has two real choices for the target film this week, a romantic comedy and a horror film, and we decided the horror film, Friday the 13th, was more appropriate.
In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Friday the 13th.

2009 got off to a great start and February hopes to continue that run, but I don't think that's likely. First of all, none of the releases coming out this month look like they have what it takes to reach $100 million. Or even $80 million. This means the best film of this month will likely be lower than the biggest-earning film of last month and the biggest earner of this month last year.
Hopefully there will be fewer outright misses and more mid-level hits, which will help 2009 keep pace with 2008.
