DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 19th, 2013

November 20th, 2013

There are some good releases this week, but it is also a shallow week. If you look at Amazon.com's list of new releases, by the third or fourth page, you will find more filler than releases worth talking about. On the other hand, there are a number of late releases that finally arrived and I was able to get done. There are a number of contenders for Pick of the Week this week, including Doctor Who Story 29: The Tenth Planet, which is a must have for all Whovians. Kinky Boots is a very fun movie and you can't beat the price of the DVD. On the other hand, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray releases for Season Five and Unification are expensive, but worth it for fans. In the end, I went with The World's End on Blu-ray Combo Pack for Pick of the Week. More...

Featured DVD Review: Kinky Boots

November 18th, 2013

Kinky Boots came out in 2006 and did relatively well in limited release. Most limited releases don't crack the $1 million mark at the box office. But I think the studio was hoping for a whole lot more. This explains why it is coming out on DVD this week as a bargain release from Echo Bridge. Is it worth checking out if you missed it the first time? And despite being a bargain release, does it have any extras? More...

Contest: Best of Luck

November 8th, 2013

Next week there is only one wide release, but unlike this week, its rather weak. The Best Man Holiday has the weekend to itself, but will very likely get crushed by Thor: The Dark World at the box office. Even so, since it is the only wide release, it is the only choice for the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for The Best Man Holiday. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of Kinky Boots on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of Kinky Boots on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 29th, 2013

October 28th, 2013

Like last week, the home market is rather slow this week. There are more than 200 new releases, which is a step up from last week when there were only 161, at least according to Amazon.com. But even so, this week is arguably worse, if you only look at the top releases. The number one release is Monsters University, but number two is R.I.P.D., which bombed both in theaters and with critics. There are not even a few limited releases to help fill out the list, like we had last week. In fact, I'm pretty sure the Christmas Releases outnumber the non-Christmas releases by a sizable margin. Fortunately, there are two contenders for Pick of the Week, including Monsters University on Blu-ray Collector's Edition or 3D Combo Pack and Degrassi: Season 12. The former is the Pick of the Week, while the latter takes home the rarely awarded Puck of the Week. More...

DVD Releases for September 5, 2006

September 5th, 2006

It's another busy week with a ton of top-notch releases. Not so much from the first run releases, as United 93 - Collector's Edition is the only wide release on the list while Kinky Boots - Buy from Amazon is the best of the limited releases. Nope, to find the best of the best you have to look at the Special Editions and TV on DVD categories. For the former we have three contenders, Brazil - Criterion Collection - 3-Disc Box Set, Gojira / Godzilla - King of the Monsters - 2-Disc Set , and The Seven Samurai - Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon. While from the latter we have Lost - The Complete Second Season - Extended Experience and Supernatural - The Complete First Season. Trying to limit those five picks to one was impossible, so I'm going with Brazil - Criterion Collection - 3-Disc Box Set and Lost - The Complete Second Season - Extended Experience, although I'm fairly convinced all seven of the above DVDs will find a way into my DVD collection eventually. Da Vinci Da Stroys Competition

May 23rd, 2006

First of all, this headline represents the last of my Da Vinic Da puns, I promise. (On a side note, had the movie bombed I would have used Da Vinci Da Saster as the headline. Awful, isn't it?) Moving on... The Da Vinci Code was the only film able to earn more than $10,000 per theatre over the weekend with an incredible $77.1 million in 3,735 for a per theatre average of $20,635. That was more than double the second place film, fellow wide release Over the Hedge, which came close to making the $10,000 club with $9,475. More...

Per Theatre Chart is Sweet as Candy

April 18th, 2006

Hard Candy easily won the race on the per theatre charts, taking in nearly $60,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $29,025. Friends with Money slipped to second place with a still impressive $17,611 average in 42 theatres, which bodes well for Friday when it is scheduled to open in several hundred more theatres. The only other movie in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Scary Movie 4, with $11,167. More...

Contest - Box Office Prediction - Kinky Contests

April 9th, 2006

This week we have another three-way contest with prizes from Show Me, I Am a Sex Addict, and Barry Manilow. As always, the object of the contest is to predict the opening box office of a certain film with the person who comes closest to predicting the opening 3-day weekend (Friday to Sunday), without going over, winning the prize. To win Barry Manilow - Music and Passion, predict the opening weekend of Scary Movie 4. To win an autographed poster from I Am a Sex Addict, predict the opening weekend of Kinky Boots. Finally, to win a copy of Show Me on DVD, predict the opening weekend of Hard Candy. And, if that wasn't enough, of the three winners, the person whose margin of error is the lowest (on a percentage basis), will win a bonus prize.
