DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 29th, 2011

November 29th, 2011

It's another relatively slow week on the home market. The two biggest release of the week don't come out till Friday, while there are few other releases to pick up the slack. As for the search for best and not necessarily the biggest, there are a few contenders. Cave of Forgotten Dreams earned Oscar-worthy reviews and the 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack is a clear contender for Pick of the Week. But in the end I went with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil on DVD or Blu-ray. Per Theater Chart: What a Weekend!

September 27th, 2011

Weekend earned nearly perfect reviews, but I'm still surprised by its box office strength as it earned $27,245 in one theater during its opening weekend of release. The Man Nobody Knew was next with $15,411, also in one theater. Machine Gun Preacher also topped expectations with an average of $11,283 in four theaters, but its reviews suggest it won't last long. Pearl Jam Twenty earned an average of $10,245 in ten theaters over the weekend, and including the special showing it had earlier in the week, it already has close to $400,000. More...

Per Theater Chart: Restlessly Waiting for Awards Season

September 21st, 2011

Restless won the race to the top of the per theater chart with $15,467 in its lone theater. However, given its reviews, I don't think the word of mouth will be there to help it expand. The Lion King was second with an average of $12,941. The Mill and the Cross was the only other film to cross $10,000 at $11,354 over the weekend and $15,443 from Wednesday through Sunday. More...

Per Theater Chart: Laughing at the Competition

September 14th, 2011

There was only one film to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart, but it did it with style. Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain earned just under $2 million in 98 theaters for an average of $19,474. I wasn't expecting it to earn $2 million in total. More...

Per Theater Chart: Detective Dee on the Case

September 7th, 2011

The per theater chart is nearly empty and only Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame topping $10,000 over the three-day portion of the weekend. It's average from Friday through Sunday was $17,533 in three theaters. Bodyguard earned an average of $9,813 in 88 theaters over the three-day portion of the weekend, but crossed over the $10,000 mark if you include Monday. It was even more impressive if you take into account its Wednesday and Thursday numbers. More...

Labor Day Delivers Big Limited Releases

September 2nd, 2011

The selection of limited releases is not great with only one, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame, earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. On the other hand, there are three films opening in more than 100 theaters, none of which are likely to become hits. It could be a really soft weekend on the per theater chart. Fortunately, Awards Season is not too far away. More...
