DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 30th, 2013

April 30, 2013

Like I mentioned last week, this week the biggest release on the home market is Silver Linings Playbook, while there are a couple other sizable releases, like Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Three on Blu-ray. However, you quickly run into filler as you look down the list. Fortunately, Silver Linings Playbook is such a great movie that the Blu-ray Combo Pack would be Pick of the Week material, even during a busy week. It is not the only contender for that title. Even sight unseen, Kyatto-Ninden Teyandee Complete Series Megaset comes a close second, while Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Three earned that title last week.

Ben Hur: The Epic Miniseries Event - Buy from Amazon
This is not the first time this story has been adapted. Personally, I liked the silent movie version the best, but if you are a fan of the 1959 epic, there's little reason to buy this one.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Earth from Space, The Enforcer, Fairy Tail: Collection One, Friends: Season One, Friends: Season Two, The Men, Night of the Scarecrow, and Patlabor
Not a lot of secondary releases. The Men is the most interesting release. It's Marlon Brando's film debut and I reviewed it previously.

Broken City - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film is featured in this week's box office prediction contest, but I'm still waiting for the screener. Hopefully it is better than its box office numbers would indicate.

The Details - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Great cast, mixed reviews, box office bomb. The only extras on the DVD and Blu-ray are an alternative opening and an alternative ending. That's not enough to lift it past a rental.

The Guilt Trip - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Just in time for Mother's day, a film about a mother / son road trip is released. The film earned mixed reviews and wasn't able to find an audience in theaters. Will it perform better on the home market? Read our review for my opinion.

Also coming out this week is Funny Girl on Blu-ray, for those who want a Barbra Streisand double-shot.

History of the Eagles - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I like the Eagles; however, I get the impression that it is no longer cool to like this band. Not sure why that would be. This 3-disc release contains hours of documentary and concert footage, including some rare to never-before-seen footage. It is certainly worth picking up for fans of the band, while the Blu-ray is a few cents less than the DVD. There's also an Amazon.com exclusive Super-Duper-Mega-Awesome-Triple-Deluxe Edition, but it costs $250. Ouch.

KaiJudo: Rise of the Duel Masters: DragonStrike - Buy from Amazon
The second DVD from this series I've reviewed. Is it growing on me? Or are there just too many similar shows out there for this one to stand out. Check out our review to find out.

Kyatto-Ninden Teyandee - Buy from Amazon
Oh my god! It's the original Samurai Pizza Cats! For those that don't know the story, when Kyatto-Ninden Teyandee was imported to the United States, they couldn't find translated versions of the scripts, so they didn't know what was happening in the plot. So they decided write their own plot from scratch. The result, Samurai Pizza Cats, was better than it had any right to be. That show is coming out on July, but I have to buy this one just so I can compare the two.

Manborg - Buy from Amazon
A parody / homage of low-budget 1980s action films. The film has received mostly good reviews from genre critics, so if you are into B-movies, this one is at least worth a rental.

Nickelodeon Favorites: Once Upon a Rhyme - Buy from Amazon
A couple of copies of this DVD are on their way for a contest. There might be an extra one for a review, but I'm not sure.

Not Fade Away - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned good reviews, but not great reviews. It opened well, but completely collapsed when it tried to expand. If you like music from the British invasion and / or coming-of-age movies, then it is worth checking out, but a rental will be enough.

The Revisionaries - Buy from Amazon
A documentary about how the education system is being bent to fight the culture war and how science is being ignored in favor of politics. The reviews were amazing, but it never found an audience in theaters. Hopefully that will change on the home market.

Silver Linings Playbook - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This film earned some of the best reviews of any film last year and was a major player during Awards Season. This includes eight Oscar nominations and four Independent Spirit Award wins. There's no doubt it is worth picking up. The only question is whether or not it is Pick of the Week material. On the down side, there is no audio commentary track. On the plus side, there are enough other features that it is easily worth picking up and clearly the best release of the week.

Scarlet Pimpernel - Buy from Amazon
I don't case how good this TV movie is (it won one of the three Emmys it was nominated for) I wouldn't be able to watch it without thinking of The Scarlet Pumpernickel, the Daffy Duck short.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Three - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
I reviewed this release last week, but...

Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Best of Both Worlds - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
Also came out this week. It is worth picking up for more casual fans who are not interested in spending $80 on a full-season set? Are there extras here that make it worth picking up in addition to the full-season set? Read our review for my opinion.

Star Trek - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon: The Motion Picture, The Search for Spock, The Final Frontier, Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis
There are several Star Trek movies coming out this week, but they've already been released on Box Sets, which are the better deals. Also, half of these are bad movies.

Strictly Ballroom - Blu-ray - Buy from Amazon
I don't think it is unfair to say Baz Luhrmann is an acquired taste. His tendency to go for style over substance can drive some people nuts. Is that evident in his first film? And is there enough style to make the whole thing worth checking out? Check out our review for my opinion.

The Vampire Lovers - Blu-ray Buy from Amazon
According to Amazon.com, this is the 12th best new release of the week... It's a slow week.

Wagner and Me - Buy from Amazon
I forgot to send in my request for this title on time, so the screener is going to be late. I'll get to it ASAP once it arrives.

WWE: The Best of In Your House - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
It's professional wresting. What more do I need to say?

Young and Wild - Buy from Amazon
A coming-of-age story that deals with the crossroads between female sexuality and religion. It failed to find an audience in limited release, but will people want to check it out on DVD? Read our review for my opinion.
