Per Theater Chart: Competition Not Included

September 4th, 2013

It was a very lop-sided week on the per theater chart with a couple of films in the $10,000 club, but the rest of the new limited releases, and a couple of new wide releases, were floating around, or below, the Mendoza Line. Instructions Not Included was the best with an average of $22,547 in 348 theaters. Stunning. This result is simply stunning. Afternoon Delight was next with an average of $13,676 in two theaters. Neither film earned good reviews, so it will be interesting to see if either can capitalize on this start.

Like I previously said, the new limited releases were weak. Passion was the best of the rest with an average of $2,396 in 14 theaters. That's really weak. Our Nixon barely missed the Mendoza Line with an average of just $2,030 in three theaters. American Made Movie was even worse with an average of $807 in two theaters, while I Declare War was close behind with $617 in 14. Last Flight of the Champion barely managed an average of $100 in 15 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Still Mine got to $1 million over the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
  • In a World... also topped $1 million over the weekend, but it has a good shot at getting to $2 million relatively soon.
  • The Grandmaster expanded dramatically over the weekend getting all the way to $3 million, if you include Monday. Its per theater average isn't strong, so it likely won't last long.
  • The Spectacular Now reached $2 million before the weekend and $3 million over the weekend. It should get to at least a couple more milestones.
  • Chennai Express got all the way to $5 million, which is amazing for a Bollywood film.
  • Blue Jasmine hit $15 million before the weekend and $20 million over the weekend. This is more than Beautiful Creatures finished with earlier in the year.
