International Box Office: Two Tops Taken

After just two weeks of release, Taken 2 has already earned more internationally than the original did in total. Over the weekend, the sequel pulled in $45.09 million on 6,889 screens in 63 markets for a two-week total of $134.76 million, while its worldwide total rose to $220.89 million. The film had to settle for second place in Germany with $3.55 million on 437 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.88 million. It only managed fourth place in Italy with $1.26 million on 265. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. with $6.01 million on 510 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.29 million after two. The film has very few markets left to open in, but it has already made enough to cover its production budget and likely a good chunk of its P&A budget. It will reach profitability before it reaches the home market.

Ted hit another milestone earning $14.4 million on 2,736 screens in 43 markets for a total of $251.03 million internationally. Worldwide, the film has $469.54 million which is a record for R-rated comedies. In France, the film earned second place with $2.84 million on 348 screens. It made $1.90 million in Belgium, but two thirds of that came from record-breaking previews. Over the weekend, it earned $591,000 on 60 screens. Getting to $500 million worldwide remains a possibility, but it could be close.

Hotel Transylvania returned to third place with $14.08 million on 3,769 screens in 24 markets for a still relatively early total of $49.65 million. The film opened in second place in the U.K. with $2.79 million on 471 screens. On the other hand, it saw its weekend haul grow by more than a third in Brazil to $4.34 million on 441 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $9.25 million.

The Impossible opened in its native Spain with $11.65 million on 638 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $13.34 million. That's not only the biggest opening for a local film in Spain, it's the biggest opening in that market of all time, topping Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Looper fell to fifth place with $11.00 million on 2,838 screens in 31 markets for a total of $58.71 million after three weeks of release. The film opened in a lot of markets, but mostly the smaller variety. It added $1.89 million on 453 screens in the U.K. for a three-week total of $12.16 million.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted fell to sixth place with $10.29 million on 2,546 screens in 33 markets for totals of of $465.19 million internationally and $681.56 million worldwide. It had no major market openings this weekend, but remained in top spot in Germany with $6.37 million on 742 screens over the weekend for a total of $24.10 million. This coming weekend it opens in the U.K. and has a shot at earning $700 million worldwide by this time next week.

Bait 3D entered the chart for the first time earning seventh place with $8.06 million on 2,176 screens in 4 markets for a total of $15.21 million. The film debuted in China with $7.2 million on 2,000 screens, which is very impressive.

Resident Evil: Retribution fell from sixth to eighth with $5.55 million on 3,077 screens in 65 markets for totals of $170.44 million internationally and $212.19 million worldwide. It's coasting on holdovers, so it won't last too much longer, but it is already a box office success.

Sinister entered to the chart for the first time earning ninth place with $5.38 million on 1,526 screens in 7 markets for a total of $9.31 million. The film opened in third place in Russia with $2.10 million on 528 screens, but it only managed seventh place in Brazil with $274,000 on 170. In the U.K., the film fell just 12% to $2.02 million on 378 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.94 million.

Frankenweenie opened in tenth place with $4.9 million on 1,646 screens in 9 markets for a total of $5.3 million. It opened in a trio of major markets scoring second place in Russia with $2.15 million on 720 screens. The film had to settle for third place in Mexico with $1.66 million on 959. Finally, in Spain it only placed fourth with $1.18 million on 306.
