DVD Sales - WALL-E Sales Out of this World

December 1, 2008

WALL-E was the biggest new release of the week, as it topped the sales chart with an impressive 6.20 million units sold and $112.07 million in consumer retail spending. This is the best opening week for a DVD since At World's End sold more than 8 million units during its opening week last year and it instantly puts the DVD into second place for the year.

Second place went to Tropic Thunder with a still impressive 1.46 million units sold and $31.62 million in revenue for the week. It wasn't that long ago that a performance like that would have topped the chart. Kung Fu Panda fell to third place with 1.43 million units sold for a total of 5.96 million units. Additionally, it became just the fifth DVD to generate more than $100 million is sales this year with $101.33 million so far. Hellboy II - The Golden Army also did well adding 589,000 units and $12.14 million to take its two-week totals to 1.97 million units and $40.82 million. Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2 opened in fifth place with 372,000 units sold and $6.08 million in revenue.

There were only two other new releases to chart this week with Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special placing ninth with 242,000 units sold for $2.28 million. On the other hand, Bones - Season Three placed 15th with 143,000 units sold. However, going by dollar, its first week sales of $5.42 million were sixth best for the week.

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, Blu-ray numbers for the week were not made available before the weekend. However, it was reported that total Blu-ray sales for the year now stand at 14 million units and $410 million, which is 233% higher than the same point last year. The economic meltdown will likely prevent the format from reaching its beginning of the year goals of 40 million units and $1 billion in sales. That said, compared to DVD sales, which are down 8.5%, Blu-ray is certainly looking great going forward.
