International Box Office: Apocalypse Leaves World Intact with $103.2 million

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse started its international run in first place with $103.2 million. At first glance, that's a good start. On the other hand, the film is playing in 75 markets, so it doesn't have a lot of markets left to open in. Back to the original hand, one of the markets it has yet to open in is China. The film's biggest single market was the U.K., where it opened in first place with $10.99 million in 598 theaters. This is nearly 30% less than Days of Future Past earned and with weaker reviews, it will likely have weaker legs. The movie-to-movie decline was even steeper in Russia, where it was down 38% to $6.41 million on 1,208 screens, and in Australia, where it was down 39% with $4.68 million on 574. On the other hand, it was down a mere 6.4% in Mexico to $8.8 million and actually rose 22% in the Philippines to $4.9 million. If it can get to $600 million worldwide, then the film will break even some time during its home market run.

The Angry Birds Movie remained in second place with $55.5 million in 83 markets for totals of $112.0 million internationally and $150.2 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in China with $29.99 million. This is better than Zootopia managed in that market, but I don't think The Angry Birds Movie will have the same legs.

Captain America: Civil War was pushed into third place with $30.7 million in 55 markets over the weekend for totals of $706.1 million internationally and $1.053 billion worldwide. It became the first film released in 2016 to reach the billion dollar milestone. It won't be the last. It also became the fourth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reach the $1 billion mark. Again, it won't be the last.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant returned to the chart in fourth place with $11.0 million in 5 markets over the weekend for totals of $105.3 million internationally and $171.3 million worldwide. Almost all of its weekend haul came from China, where it earned $9.86 million during its opening weekend. The film needed over $250 million worldwide to have any chance of breaking even any time soon.

The Wailing held on really well with $9.59 million on 1,391 screens over the weekend in South Korea for a two-week total of $31.47 million.

Zootopia inched closer to $1 billion worldwide with $4.7 million in 25 markets over the weekend for totals of $647.4 million internationally and $981.8 million worldwide. It appears on pace to hit $1 billion worldwide, hopefully while it is still doing well enough to get international numbers.
