Friday Estimates: Asians’ Crazy Rich First Place Opening

August 18, 2018

Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians led the way on Friday with an impressive $7.26 million. Since it opened on Wednesday, it should have better legs than most new releases earn. Likewise, its reviews and its A from CinemaScore will also help its legs, putting it on pace for between $22 million and $23 million over the three-day weekend. Over four days, the film should make about $31 million, which is more than it cost to make. Even taking into account the studio’s share of the box office, Warner Bros. will cover its production budget before the end of the month, just on the its domestic numbers. Unless it really struggles internationally, it will break even before it reaches the home market. This might be enough to get more movies with predominantly Asian-American casts made in Hollywood.

The Meg fell 65% from its opening Friday, earning $5.8 million. This matches our prediction almost perfectly and it should earn just under $20 million over the weekend. At this pace, it will crack $100 million domestically next weekend.

Mile 22 opened in third place with $5.26 million, putting it on pace for just under $14 million. Additionally, its reviews are among the worst of any wide release this summer and it only managed a B minus from CinemaScore, so it is not going to have good legs going forward. Granted, the film only cost $35 million to make and it should be able to match that during its domestic run, but this is still not a great start.

Alpha started in fourth place with $3.36 million; however, it won’t stay there long, as both Mission: Impossible—Fallout and Christopher Robin will overtake it over the weekend. The reviews are actually really good, but it only managed a B plus from CinemaScore, so it will fall to sixth place with just over $9 million over the weekend.
