Daily Box Office: Ralph is Breaking Record Books

November 22, 2018

Ralph Breaks the Internet

It’s Thanksgiving long weekend, which means many studios are closed and are not reporting official numbers. However, one of the studios that is reporting numbers is Disney and they are reporting record-breaking numbers. Ralph Breaks the Internet earned $18.5 million on Wednesday, which is significantly more than either Coco or Moana managed the previous two years. In fact, this is more than Frozen managed during its record-breaking wide expansion back in 2013. This film’s reviews are great and it earned an A minus from CinemaScore, so it should have good legs and could top Frozen’s $93.59 million five-day opening. In fact, some studios think it has a real chance of $100 million during its five-day opening. I’m not that bullish, but even if it only earns $90 million over five-days, it will still be a monster hit and way more than we predicted.

We don’t have official numbers for Creed II, but other studios are estimating $11.6 million on Wednesday. I was expecting $10 million Wednesday, so this is an amazing start. Its reviews remain great and it earned a straight A from CinemaScore, so it should have long legs, at least compared to most sequels. It will easily top our prediction and a five-day opening of a little more than $60 million is likely.

Dr Seuss’ The Grinch was a tiny bit better than we were anticipating with $7.05 million on Wednesday, putting it on pace for just over $41 million over the five-day weekend. The film will easily clear $200 million, especially if it is still semi-wide or wider when Christmas rolls around.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald missed expectations with $6.9 million on Wednesday, putting it on pace for $42 million over the five-day weekend. The film does have a more mature target audience when compared to Dr Seuss’ The Grinch, so it should have slightly longer legs over the Thanksgiving long weekend, allowing it to climb into third place over the five-day weekend. It will hit $100 million shortly, but this is not enough to match expectations. Fortunately, it is doing well enough internationally that it will break even early in its home market run, but it is not nearly as profitable as the Harry Potter films were.

We also don’t have official numbers for Robin Hood, but other studios estimate it earned $3.2 million on Wednesday. Its reviews are not helping, while it only managed a B from CinemaScore, which will also hurt its legs. That said, its Wednesday number is better than expected and it could make as much as $15 million over five days. Even getting to just over $14 million will be enough to beat our prediction.
