Weekend Estimates: Ralph Slips, Still Strong, Hannah Tops Expectations, Still Soft

Ralph Breaks the Internet will retain top spot on the weekend box office chart with an estimated $25.8 million for a two-week total of $119.3 million. Granted, this is lower than we predicted, but not so much lower than anyone at Disney should be panicking. Internationally, the film added an estimated $33.7 million in 27 markets, lifting its international total to $87.7 million after two weeks of release. Its only major market opening of the weekend was the U.K. where it reportedly earned $5.2 million. This is less than Wreck-It Ralph opened with, but that film debuted during the school holidays, so it got a boost. Ralph Breaks the Internet should have longer than average legs thanks to Christmas, but I don’t think it will match its predecessor in this market.
Dr Seuss’ The Grinch should come within a rounding error of predictions with $17.73 million over the weekend for a total of $203.51 million after four weeks of release. It has secured its spot as the biggest November release. Internationally, the film continues to expand pulling in a predicted $27.1 million over the weekend for a running tally of $64.8 million so far. This weekend’s new markets include Germany, where it had to settle for second place with a reported $3.75 million. Meanwhile, it likely opened in first place in neighboring France with $3.70 million.
Creed II will be next with an estimated $16.83 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $81.17 million. It’s just over a week away from $100 million.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald fell even faster than expected earning an estimated $11.20 million for a three-week total of $134.34 million. The film is going to earn less in total than the final Harry Potter film earned during its opening weekend. It is doing much better internationally with an estimated $40.2 million over the weekend for a total of $385.3 million so far.
It looks like Bohemian Rhapsody will match expectations nearly perfectly with $8.1 million over the weekend for a running tally of $164.4 million.
According to studio estimates, The Possession of Hannah Grace will open outside of the top five, but with with a surprisingly strong $6.5 million. This is more than the $6 million it cost to make, so Sony should be happy with that. On the other hand, with terrible reviews and a C minus from CinemaScore, its legs will likely be very short.
As for limited releases, estimates have The Favorite earning $1.11 million over the weekend in just 34 theaters for an average of $32,500. Mirai also came out this weekend, but... I love GKIDS. They are one of the few studios that will release Anime titles theatrically, but their releases are so far from standard that they are hard to talk about. The film had a special screening on Thursday in 780 theaters, but only 20 theaters carried it over the full weekend. In total, it managed $273,000. That’s weaker than I would have liked, but not as bad as the numbers look at first glance.
