2018 - Awards Season: WGA - Nominations

January 10, 2019

Black Panther

The Writers Guild of America has a lot of categories, as they hand out nearly 30 awards. However, only three of them are for theatrical releases. The list of nominees include several major Awards Season players and not a lot of surprises. There are some clear patterns emerging, but also some surprising results.

The categories and nominees are...

Best Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Documentary Screenplay

Notes and Reactions...

  • Again, there was a lot of cutting and pasting, as most of the Original and Adapted Screenplay nominees had previous major Awards Season nominations. Only A Quiet Place can be seen as a surprise inclusion in the first category.
  • Black Panther’s chances at an Oscar took a hit when it was passed over by the DGAs, but it recovered a little bit with its nomination here.
  • Then we get to documentaries. It’s a wild list and I’m not sure what this says about the Oscars.
