Theater Averages: History is Being Written

January 24, 2019

Who Will Write Our History

Who Will Write Our History topped the theater average chart with $13,390 in its lone theater. One could also argue Dragon Ball Super: Broly was the true leader on this chart. Because the film played in a different number of theaters each day over the weekend, it is hard to come up with a real theater average for the weekend. Taking the average of the daily averages gets us $13,643, which would be number one of the weekend. Using the maximum theater count still gets us an average of $7,870, which is still amazing. The only other film in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Glass, with an average of $10,500.

The next best new limited release was What is Democracy with $6,284 in one theater. The Heiress was playing in two theaters earning an average of $5,652. An Acceptable Loss is playing on VOD, so its opening weekend of $3,447 in one theater is actually rather good. On the other hand, Canal Street missed the Mendoza Line earning an average of just $1,483 in 73 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Uri: The Surgical Strike hit $1 million early in the weekend and by the end of holiday Monday, it was nearly at $2 million.
  • Shoplifters made it to $2 million and that might not be the end for the film.
  • If Beale Street Could Talk got to $10 million over the weekend. It is not doing as well during awards season as I would like, but it could still get to $15 million.
  • On the Basis of Sex did get to $15 million over the weekend and while it will start to lose theaters, $20 million still seems like a safe bet.
  • Dragon Ball Super: Broly hit $20 million by the end of its first weekend.
  • Green Book continues to do well during Awards Season and that helped it hit $40 million over the weekend.
