Home Market Releases for August 6th, 2019

August 7, 2019

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is the biggest release of the week and it is also one of the best. Amazing Grace and Penguin Highway and better movies, but Pikachu is the only one of the three Pick of the Week contenders with significant extras on its DVD / Blu-ray release.

Alice, Sweet Alice - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Karen is killed just before her first confirmation and when there are more murders, Karen’s parents think Karen’s older sister is responsible. I might get a screener and its reviews are a strong selling point. There are a lot of extras, including new and archival extras, so if you are a fan of really old-school slasher flicks, then this is worth picking up.

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This is one of the best documentaries released this year and it also had one of the biggest box office runs for the genre in 2019. Sadly, it still wasn’t enough to get any extras, so while it is worth picking up, it isn’t the Pick of the Week.

Attack on Titan: Season 3 - Part I - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I’ve heard some mixed reports on this show with some saying it lost its way, especially with the movies. However, season’s three’s reviews are the best in the show’s run so far. And to be fair, even at it’s lowest, it was still earning good to great reviews.

The Curse of La Llorana - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This could be seen as the beginning of the end of the Conjuring franchise. It had the weakest box office run in the franchise so far and even Annabelle Comes Home failed to bounce back as much as most people thought it would. Extras are fine with a trio of featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes.

Descendants 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The third film in the franchise. It will likely be the last, as one of its stars, Cameron Boyce, tragically passed away last month due to complications of epilepsy. This tragedy adds an emotional punch to this installment of the movie, which is effective on its own. There are not a lot of extras on the DVD, but fans of the movie will want to pick it up.

Love at Sea - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
It’s a Hallmark Channel original movie.

The Outpost - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Season two of the show has already started, so it is a little strange that the DVD is coming out this week and not at the beginning of July. The reviews are mixed with critics saying the show has its charm, but budget concerns keep it from reaching its full potential.

Penguin Highway

Penguin Highway - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This Anime film earned 100% positive reviews, but it was still unable to find an audience in theaters during its limited release. There are not a lot of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, but it is still a contender for Pick of the Week.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I think it is fair to say this movie isn’t nearly as good as its trailer made it look, but it is still a very fun ride. As I said before, I never played Pokémon in any of its forms until Pokémon Go, but even with my limited exposure to the franchise, I was able to quickly get into the world. It helps that the main characters are all engaging, especially Pikachu. Extras include a making-of featurette, something called Detective Mode, and Mr. Mime audio commentary track, and more. I really wanted to get this screener, but it looks like I’m going to have buy it instead. On a side note, according to Amazon, the 3D Combo Pack is coming out next week, but I’m going to assume this is a mistake on their part.

Poms - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Great cast. Terrible movie. Moving on…

Tolkien - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A standard biopic that doesn’t do enough with its subject to stand out.

What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A look back at Deep Space Nine in time for its 25th anniversary. I really liked this show when it first came out, but not all fans of Star Trek agree. Some consider it too dark and not optimistic enough to be a real Star Trek show. This crowdfunded documentary tackles that subject and others related to the show. It is certainly worth picking up for fans of the show or of the franchise in general.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
There have been a lot of 3D releases lately. Maybe the format isn’t dead.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Combo Pack
The only 4K release of the week is also the biggest release of the week.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
The Best of The Carol Burnett Show - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is not a complete series Megaset, but there are far too many episodes of this show to get one of those. I can’t imagine how much a nearly 300-episode set would cost.
