Theater Averages: Brittany Sprints to the Top

Brittany Runs a Marathon led the way on the theater average chart earning an average of $36,142 in five theaters. This is more than enough to expand significantly. Additionally, the film has more mainstream appeal than many limited releases, so it should expand enough to earn some measure of mainstream success. Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool was well back with $18,258 in one theater, but this is still a great start for a documentary. The final film in the $10,000 club was Give Me Liberty, which earned an average of $11,087 in three theaters.

The next best new limited release was Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles, which earned an average of $5,547 in seven theaters. That’s a strong start for a documentary. Tigers are not Afraid was right behind with an average of $5,118 in six. Not only is this a horror film, but it is a foreign-language horror film, so this was a particularly good start. It won’t expand wide or anything like that, but it could last long enough to build word-of-mouth for its home market run. Genesis struggled with an opening weekend of $2,585 in one theater. Then there’s Rush: Cinema Strangiato 2019. This film had a special engagement on Wednesday earning nearly $1 million, but only pulled in $2,580 in one theater over the full weekend. The weekend numbers don’t look good, but the nearly $1 million special engagement overrides that by a huge margin.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Mission Mangal had a typical decline for a Bollywood film, but it still managed to get to $2 million before the weekend and it was nearly at $3 million by the end of the weekend.
• The Peanut Butter Falcon expanded nearly semi-wide over the weekend helping it get to $3 million in the process. Its theater average is low enough that it likely won’t expand significantly beyond this point, but it also won’t disappear from theaters in a couple of weeks.
