My Hero Academia: Season Three, Part Two

It’s another short week with not a lot to talk about. The biggest release of the week is Men in Black International, but it missed expectations by a significant margin. The best first-run release is Booksmart, which also missed expectations by a significant margin, but it is still good enough to be a Pick of the Week contender. In fact, it’s only competition is My Hero Academia: Season Three, Part Two. It came down to a literal coin toss and My Hero Academia won, but both deserve the title.

Batman 80th Anniversary Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A collection of 18 animated films featuring the world’s greatest detective. Not all of the movies are really worth celebrating in a collection like this... The Killing Joke is a prime example of this, but the overall value is still good.

Booksmart

Booksmart - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Olivia Wilde made her directorial debut and the end result was an amazing movie that failed to live up to its potential at the box office. Extras include an audio commentary track, a trio of featurettes, and some deleted scenes. I was worried the film’s box office struggles would result in a near-featureless home market release. As it is, it is a Pick of the Week contender.

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Don’t buy this movie. I’m not saying that because the movie is bad, it’s a cult classic for a reason. However, Arrow Video put out a fully-loaded Blu-ray in the U.K. last year and they just announced that they are releasing that Blu-ray in the United States soon, as in by the end of the year. It’s worth the wait.

John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum

John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The John Wick franchise has seen some of the most impressive growth in a movie franchise I’ve ever seen. Has the quality also risen with the film’s box office? Or is the franchise just growing into a bloated mess? Read our review for my opinion.

Ma - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film only earned mixed reviews, but did well at the box office for a low-budget horror film. If you are a fan of horror with a more psychological bent, it is worth checking out. There are only 20 minutes of extras, which is not enough for a purchase.

Men in Black: International - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This franchise started out amazingly well, but no one has been able to capture what made the first film so good. At this point, I just don’t think it is worth continuing. Additionally, while there are a lot of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, most of them are really short, so it is quantity over quality.

My Hero Academia: Season Three, Part Two

My Hero Academia: Season Three, Part Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The third season of this Anime series earned reviews that are almost as good as the second season’s reviews were, which is great news, as the second season earned some of the best reviews the year it came out. There are plenty of extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, especially compared to most Anime releases.

The Tatami Galaxy: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
A college student decides he’s wasted his first two years at college and decides to ask a fellow student out, but when he abandons this plan, he’s whisked away into the past to relive his past two years. This Anime came out in 2010 and it is one of the best of that year’s crop and certainly worth checking out. There are not a lot of extras, which limits the Blu-ray to a purchase and not a Pick of the Week contender.

Under the Autumn Moon - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is a TV on DVD release, but it is selling well enough that is should be mentioned on the main list. It is also a Hallmark Channel original movie with no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so there’s not a lot to be said.

The only 4K secondary release this week is Rambo, which is coming out just a couple of weeks before the latest installment in the franchise.

Dark Phoenix is the biggest secondary VOD release of the week, but it is far from the best.
