2020 Awards Season: Golden Globes Nominations

December 11, 2019

Marriage Story

The Golden Globes nominations are the second major Awards Season set to come out. It is still very early in the year and the predictive value of the Golden Globes is a little suspect, but there are still some things to learn here. (This is especially true on the TV end, as there’s talk about how strange the nominations are this year.) Marriage Story led the way with six nominations, just ahead of The Irishman and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, both of which picked up five nods.

The categories and nominees are...

BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA

BEST MOTION PICTURE - COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Notes and Reactions...

  • The three films with the most nominations were Marriage Story, The Irishman, and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. Two of those three films were made by streaming services. I guess the backlash against streaming services is over.
  • Cats was also entirely shut out, which is amazing for an awards ceremony with three categories dedicated to Musical or Comedy films. It did get a Best Original Song nomination, but that almost feels like a pity nod.
  • On other other hand, it was a great year for foreign-language films, with three of the film nominees earning at least one additional nomination.
  • Golden Globe voters need to see some smaller animated films before voting, because there were several smaller films that could have easily beat out one of two of their actual nominees.
