Home Market Releases for January 14th, 2020

January 13, 2020

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

It’s a really bad week on the home market. Granted, there are three wide releases on this week’s list, which is better than most weeks. However, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the biggest and the best of these three releases. That’s not a good sign. There are not even a lot of smaller releases to make up for the weakness at the top.

Beverly Hills Cop - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Paramount has been looking to make a fourth installment in this franchise since 2013 when they made a failed pilot. This three-movie box set is selling well enough that it could get the film actually made.

Dragon Ball Super: Part 10 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
It’s Dragon Ball. It’s one of the most popular Anime franchises of all time and certainly one of the longest running. Various releases have appeared on this list so many times that I ran out of things to say years ago.

Gemini Man - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Ang Lee is turning into Robert Zemeckis, and that is not a compliment. Both directors got obsessed with a new technology to the point where they cared more about what it could do and not how to use it to tell a compelling story. Maybe high frame rate cinematography will turn into an important tool for filmmaking, but someone needs to figure out a way to use it that aids the telling of a story in a unique way, rather than being a distraction.

Jexi - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This was a late contender for worst movie of 2019. Skip it.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil - Reviews - Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand (With Extras)
I named this film Pick of the Week when it came out on VOD, because there was nothing else that came out that week. Now that it has some competition, it is still a Pick of the Week contender? Or is it strictly a rental? Read our review for my opinion.

The Peanut Butter Solution - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon.ca: Blu-ray
This Blu-ray had a lot of release dates on Amazon.com, but it is now available on Amazon.ca, so I think it has actually been released.

TV on DVD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Krypton: The Complete Second & Final Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Krypton: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
MacGyver: Season 3 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
VEEP: Season 7 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
VEEP: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
There are two complete series Megasets on this week’s list, but the two shows had opposite runs. Krypton started out slowly and while it improved during season two, it was too late. On the other hand, VEEP will be remembered as one of the best comedies of the 2010s.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Brewster’s Millions: Collector’s Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Fugitive Kind: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Gamers!: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Great McGinty - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Mummy’s Shroud - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Night Patrol - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Penelope - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Running with the Devil - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
There’s a short list of secondary Blu-ray releases this week with not a lot of top-tier entries. I’m most interested in Brewster’s Millions, but I will admit it has been at least couple of decades since I’ve seen it, so my memory might not be reliable on this one.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Another week with no 3D releases...

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
And no secondary 4K releases either.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Harriet - Reviews - Video on Demand
House of Demons - No Reviews - Video on Demand
Motherless Brooklyn - Reviews - Video on Demand
Pain and Glory - Reviews - Video on Demand
Parasite - Reviews - Video on Demand
The Story of Us - Reviews - Video on Demand
Terminator: Dark Fate - Reviews - Video on Demand
Terminator: Dark Fate - Reviews - Video on Demand (4K Ultra HD)
Valentine in the Vineyard - Reviews - Video on Demand
Both Pain and Glory and Parasite got Oscar nods, so that should help their home market numbers. On the other hand, Terminator: Dark Fate bombed in theaters, so it will need a healthy home market run, just to limit the losses.
