VOD Releases: The Long and Short of It

June 17, 2020

The Short History of the Long Road

There are a lot of smaller releases on this week’s list and nothing that truly stands out as a potential hit. However, almost everyone should find something worth watching. The Soul Collector should please fans of low-budget horror movies. Roger Waters Us + Them is worth the money for fans of Pink Floyd. The indie drama The Short History of the Long Road is earning a lot of praise. The Cameraman is the best movie on this week’s list, but the Blu-ray is the better deal than a VOD rental.

Highlights

The Cameraman
Amazon
This is an all-time classic. In fact, it is Buster Keaton’s last classic, because after this, he didn’t have creative control over his films. However, it is so good that I would completely ignore the VOD release and stick with the Criterion Collection Blu-ray instead.

The Etruscan Smile
Amazon or Vudu
This film has more reviews than nearly all other films on this week’s list; however, the reviews are merely good and not great. Brian Cox is earning praise for his performance, but he is let down by a familiar and inauthentic script.

Good Kisser
Amazon or Vudu
This film doesn’t have a lot of reviews, but the ones I’ve seen are positive. If you are a fan of the genre, then it is worth checking out. However, the small number of reviews means it is probably better to start with a rental.

Roger Waters Us + Them
Amazon VOD or Amazon Ultra HD VOD
Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands of all time. Them, Queen, and Weird Al are probably my top three. This concert film is from his 2017-2018 tour and the reviews are excellent. It is at least worth a rental, while you wait for the DVD / Blu-ray to come out on October 2.

Shoot to Marry
Amazon, Google Play, or Vudu
A documentarian decides to try to find a girlfriend by interviewing women for a documentary. … That’s super creepy, right? Even the positive reviews mention the creep-factor, while the negative reviews emphasize that as a reason to not see the film.

The Short History of the Long Road
Amazon, Google Play, or Vudu
An indie drama starring Sabrina Carpenter and Danny Trejo, among others. This film doesn’t have a lot of reviews, but the ones it has are positive enough that it would have had a shot at some box office success in limited release, under more ideal circumstances. As it is, it is certainly worth $4 for a VOD rental.

The Soul Collector
Amazon, Google Play, or Vudu
A low-budget horror movie released by Shout Factory, which is a company that has an impressive track record on the home market. The movie doesn’t have a ton of reviews out there, but the ones it does have are positive enough that it is worth a rental at the very least. Fans of the genre might end up buying this one.
