VOD Releases: The Long and Short of It

June 17th, 2020

The Short History of the Long Road

There are a lot of smaller releases on this week’s list and nothing that truly stands out as a potential hit. However, almost everyone should find something worth watching. The Soul Collector should please fans of low-budget horror movies. Roger Waters Us + Them is worth the money for fans of Pink Floyd. The indie drama The Short History of the Long Road is earning a lot of praise. The Cameraman is the best movie on this week’s list, but the Blu-ray is the better deal than a VOD rental. More...

New on Disc: The Cameraman gets a Well-Deserved Criterion Collection Release

June 16th, 2020

The Cameraman

A lot of people and industries are suffering because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the entertainment industry is among the hardest hit. Theater closings three months ago are now having a knock-on effect on the home market, as every major theatrical release of 2020 has hit the home market in one form or another, so until theaters are fully open again, no major new theatrical hits will arrive on the home market. Fortunately, while there’s little in the way of quantity, there’s some serious quality this week. Pretty in Pink is making its Blu-ray debut. We have two massive box sets that are worth picking up. However, the best choice is The Cameraman: The Criterion Collection on Blu-ray. More...

Home Market Releases for October 15th, 2019

October 17th, 2019

Crawl

It’s a really slow week with Crawl being the biggest release of the week, and it wasn’t a monster hit at the box office. Fortunately, it is also the best DVD / Blu-ray release of the week and was the only real contender for Pick of the Week. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Run to the Theaters

August 23rd, 2019

Brittany Runs a Marathon

There are several releases on this week’s list earning amazing reviews, including Brittany Runs a Marathon, which has the best shot at attracting a mainstream audience. On the other hand, Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles and Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool could do well on the art house scene. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Don’t Hate Limited Releases

October 5th, 2018

The Hate U Give

We are getting really close to Awards Season and there are some top-notch films on this week’s list that could pick up some major nominations. This includes The Hate U Give, which is the biggest release of the week. However, I’m also interested in The Great Buster, Private Life, Trouble, and Heavy Trip. More...

Home Market Releases for February 14th, 2017

February 13th, 2017

Arrival

It is an interesting week with four top-notch releases. Unfortunately, two of those releases, Doctor Strange and Moonlight, are VOD only. This leaves just two contenders for Pick of the Week: Arrival and The Edge of Seventeen. Both are absolute must haves, but Arrival’s Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack have far more extras and it is the Pick of the Week. More...

2016 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part III - Limited Releases, Classics, Foreign Imports

December 14th, 2016

Trilogía de Guillermo del Toro

After dealing with first-run releases and TV on DVD releases, we come to the instalment of our Holiday Gift Guide that deals with limited releases, classics, and foreign imports. This list should be longer than last week, but hopefully I won’t go overboard. More...

Home Market Releases for May 24th, 2016

May 24th, 2016

Mustang

There are not a lot of first-run releases on this week's list and none that are contenders for Pick of the Week. That's not to say there are no contenders, but they come from catalog releases, TV on DVD, etc. Buster Keaton: The Shorts Collection 1917-1923 on Blu-ray tops that list. However, I'm going with Mustang on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack as the Pick of the Week. The screener arrived late, but it was worth it. More...

2012 - Holiday Gift Guide - Part III

December 15th, 2012

We are getting closer and closer to Christmas and we are getting to the crunch time for gift shopping. After checking out first run releases and franchise box sets in Part I and TV on DVD releases in Part II, this week we look at limited releases, classics, and foreign films. Some are pretty obvious choices, as we had a few limited releases that broke into the mainstream during their theatrical releases, but there are also a few more films that slipped beneath the radar the last time around. The biggest of these is... More...
