New on Disc: Scoob! Steals the Spotlight
July 21, 2020
It is a rather slow on the home market, even compared to what we’ve seen recently. However, there are at least a couple of releases that should do well on the sales chart. Scoob! should easily sell the most units of any release on this week’s list, but Northern Exposure: The Complete Series is getting the jump on next week’s massive flood of TV on DVD releases and that’s clearly helping its sales numbers. That said, neither of these are contenders for Pick of the Week; in fact, there is really only one contender for that title, Marriage Story, which is getting a Criterion Collection release this week.
Airplane! - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Clueless: 25th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Ghost - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Marriage Story: Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Northern Exposure: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Scoob! - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo
You Don’t Nomi - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are a lot of classic adventure films on this week’s list, many of which are more than 60 years old. This includes Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, which is listed as a Kindle release. I would report it to Amazon, but I’m already in a weeks-long battle with Wizards of the Coast’s customer service and I don’t feel like dealing with another incompetent customer service department.
American Experience: George W. Bush - Buy from Amazon: DVD
They started re-releasing Charmed to Blu-ray, but they are re-releasing the full series on DVD. Strange.
John Wick - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Both of these releases are worth owning. However, the John Wick franchise isn’t done yet, so I would wait for a full franchise box set.
Highlights
This is one of the best comedies of all time and an all-time classic spoof. However, it has been released way too many times to recommend this new release. There are a couple of new featurettes, so if you don’t have it on Blu-ray yet, it is worth picking up, but the film has been on Blu-ray for nearly a decade, so I don’t suspect many fans of the movie haven’t picked it up already.
Didn’t this come out last week? It’s a great movie, but the releases are getting confusing.
I swear I reviewed this movie in the past. It is certainly worth owning, but this is not the first time it has hit Blu-ray. There is a new transfer, and a short interview, but I don’t know if that is enough to justify a double-dip.
This is the best release on the main list this week and it isn’t a double-dip. Furthermore, there are a ton of extras, which isn’t a surprise, as it is a Criterion Collection. These extras include a making-of featurette, a couple of behind-the-scenes, interview featurettes, and more. It is easily worth picking up and practically the only contender for Pick of the Week.
This is just an absolutely fantastic show and the only downside to this DVD box set is the lack of real extras and the fact that it is a double-dip. The lack of extras is common for this type of release; after all, the TV show is nearly 30 years old and I bet they don’t have behind-the-scenes footage to use. Additionally, the previous DVD box set is seven years old, it is out of print, and it currently costs just over $300 on Amazon, so fans of the show will be thrilled to get this new release. It isn’t a Pick of the Week contender, but it is up there.
This is a middling kids film that tries to pack in too many cameos from other Hanna Barbara cartoons. It tries to set up a Hanna Barbara cinematic universe without first giving audiences reason to really care about this film. That said, if you are a fan of the many, many characters in the movie and grew up watching the cartoons, then the nostalgia offered here is a major selling point. There are enough extras that if you have kids who liked the movie, then it is worth picking up. However, I don’t think it will appeal to enough adults to be worth grabbing if you don’t have kids.
A documentary about Showgirls, which was a critical and box office bomb, but has since become a cult classic. Unfortunately, there are no special features on the DVD / Blu-ray. It is still worth checking out for most, picking up for fans of the movie or fans of this subgenre of documentaries. However, had it had a full list of extras, then it would have been a Pick of the Week contender, so that’s disappointing.
