Theater counts: Shazam arrives in 4,071 theaters

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will launch in 4,071 theaters this weekend, a slight drop from the 4,217 locations that hosted Shazam! on its opening weekend back in April, 2019, but still a formidable number. Moving On will also get a wide release this weekend.

Fury of the Gods marks the first release for the DC Extended Universe since Black Adam, which earned $168 million after opening back in October. That was the first DC film to earn over $100 million domestically since the first Shazam!, which ended up with $140.4 million domestically and $363.6 million worldwide. Obviously the pandemic had a lot to do with the two-and-a-half year dry spell for the franchise, but this will be a chance to build momentum ahead of the releases of The Flash and Blue Beetle later this year.

Even if the new Shazam! isn’t expected to post the kind of opening enjoyed by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania a few weeks ago, it has still mostly cleared out the weekend so far as rival wide releases go. The lone exception is Moving On, a comedy starring Lily Tomln and Jane Fonda that Roadside Attractions has booked in 794 theaters. Its weekend will be worth paying attention to after 80 for Brady’s strong performance recently.

Opening in 357 theaters, Focus Features’ Inside stars Willem Dafoe as an art thief who gets trapped in a New York penthouse after his heist doesn’t go as planned.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Lionsgate projects that John Wick: Chapter 4 will debut in 3,700 theaters. The previous outing in the franchise started out in 3,850 movie houses, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if this one gains a few between now and a March 24.
