Per Theater Chart Empties Out

January 28, 2009

There wasn't a single film to reach $10,000 on the per theater chart at the weekend. Slumdog Millionaire led the way with $7,562, which is a better average than the film has earned in three of the five past weekends, despite expanding to the widest it has ever been by a large margin.

The best of the new releases was Of Time and the City, which opened with $5,595 in one theater. Donkey Punch and Killshot struggled with $2,372 and $2,148 respectively. Outlander bombed with an average of just $736 in 81 theaters, but it has a shot at earning some success on the home market. On the other hand, the less said about Dog Eat Dog and its $80 weekend box office the better.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Revolutionary Road is the first film on this week's list to reach a milestone, and it's a big one at $10 million.
  • Frost/Nixon hit $10 million over the weekend, and should have no trouble getting to $15 million. However, $20 million might be out of reach.
  • Defiance hit $15 million, but it feels like a wide release at this point.
  • Slumdog Millionaire reached $50 million over the weekend and at the end of the weekend was just behind Saw V on the list of biggest box office hits from 2008.
