Avatar Scores $3.5 Million at Midnight Screenings, Big Opening Day in Australia

December 18, 2009

Avatar got off to a good start overnight, according to Fox's estimate for midnight shows. The movie earned $3,537,000 according to the studio, putting it well on course for a big opening day. Midnight shows were limited to 3D screens in 2,200 theaters, and the long running time of the movie prevented multiple shows overnight, but the number is still far behind New Moon's extraordinary $26.27 million opening night four weeks ago.

We also have the first international numbers for Avatar: a A$2,540,392 opening day in Australia in 588 theaters. That's equivalent to US$2,262,551 at current exchange rates. The Australian running total is A$3,471,517 including previews, or US$3,091,839. That's the fifth-best opening day in Australia, a list headed again by New Moon, which posted A$5.04 million in November.
